Become a Montessori Preschool Teacher!

The Montessori Teacher Academy (MTA) is an accredited certification program of The Montessori Academy at Edison Lakes and IU South Bend Extended Learning Services for the teaching of children ages 2 ½ - 6 in the Montessori environment. It is designed as a one-year program which consists of a six-week full- time (8 hours a day, 5 days a week) academic session conducted in the summer, three weekend workshops of additional curriculum (October, February and May) and a full school year of student teaching.

The next certification program begins in June of 2008 and ends with the school year in June of 2009. The class of 2007-2008 is just completing their program. This class had students from Elkhart, Mishawaka, Chesterton, Fishers and Indianapolis, IN, Watervliet, MI and the Philippines. During the summer students will learn the Montessori materials and presentations. Besides student teaching, the school year will find MTA students busy preparing their assignments and the curriculum they will use when they become teachers. It is a busy year, but lifelong friendships are made through the collaborative learning style of MTA.

Details of the program and an application can be found on our web site www.iusb.edu/~cted/monte or contact Carolyn Fermoyle, 574-520-4191, cfermoyl@iusb.edu

Julie Gabrielse was named MTA program director in November of 2005. She is a graduate of MTA, has taught at The Montessori Academy at Edison Lakes for six years, and has also been an instructor, field consultant, and supervising teacher for MTA.

"I am really excited about being the program director of MTA. I am committed to the highest quality academic standards and providing our students the best all-encompassing Montessori curriculum. We are looking forward to having an excellent class of 2007-2008."
