What Is a Certificate Program?

courses
of study providing practical, career-oriented training. Each certificate program consist
of a series of required and elective classes and is designed with the help of local
advisory committees comprised of experts in their respective fields. For many
individuals, a certificate program is an alternative or enhancement to a
traditional
university degree program.
How Can a Certificate Program Help My Career?
Whether youre looking to advance within your current profession or seeking a
position in a new field, a certificate program enables you to
enhance your skills and update your professional knowledge. In addition, the
completed certificate documents your competency in a specific area and demonstrates
commitment to your professional development.
How Does a Certificate Program Differ From a Traditional Degree
Program?
Most classes for certificate programs are not graded and do not
offer academic credit. Instead, classes offer Continuing Education Units
(CEUs), nationally recognized units of measure for professional development. One
CEU is awarded for every 10 hours of classroom instruction.
How Do I Enroll in a Certificate Program?
Formal admission to IU South Bend is not required. To enroll in a certificate program, a one-time,
non-refundable $25 fee is required. You may enroll in more than one certificate program,
however, the $25 fee must be paid for each certificate.
Do Requirements for the Certificates Ever Change?
From time to time, certificate requirements do change. The
requirements for any certificate are those in place at the time you pay
the $25 registration fee. From that point, the requirements will remain unchanged
through the completion of your certificate.
Do CEUs From Other Seminars or Universities Transfer?
Not usually. Occasional waivers are granted. Call for information

Count Toward the Certificate?
Any classes applicable to the certificate at the time the $25
registration fee is paid qualify toward completion.
How Long Does It Take to Complete a Certificate?
Most certificate programs can be completed in as little as two
years of part-time study. Certificates in computers must be completed within
one year of enrolling in the certificate program.
Are Student Loans Available?
Yes. Any student enrolled in an IU South Bend Continuing Education certificate program is eligible
to apply for Wells

Are Classes for Certificate Programs Tax Deductible? Can I Receive
Tax Credits?
Consult your tax professional for information about deductions for fees, books and
supplies.
As a continuing education student, you may qualify for a substantial tax credit.

How Do I Receive My Certificate?
When you have fulfilled all the requirements for the certificate,
return your Personal Record Worksheet to IU South Bend Continuing Education.
Once we confirm that all requirements have been met, your certificate will be prepared.
Please allow two to four weeks for delivery.
