Basic Landscaping

Get ready for spring planting and learn what you can do NOW. Landscape your own property or prepare to work in the field of landscaping by attending this "Learn and Do" class offered in cooperation with Ginger Valley, Inc. This is the first of three required classes that lead to the Certificate in Landscaping. Home owners and members of the general public are also welcome to attend.

 

Each topic will consist of a lecture at IU South Bend followed by a hands-on session. Class is taught in eight sessions with the "Learn" part of each topic on Monday evenings, while the "Do" is on Saturday mornings of the same week. In case of inclement weather on Saturdays, the class will be rescheduled.


Week 1

 

Site Selection and Preparation

 

Drainage and elevation, soil testing and adding soil amendments such as lime or peat ,types of beds and edging,, working in sun and shade

Week 2

Selecting Plants

 

Flowering annuals and perennials, bulbs and herbs, varieties that do best in the sun or shade, plants for the Michiana zone and unusual plants to try

 

Week 3

Selecting Trees and Shrubs

 

Selecting right tree or bush for the site, identifying types for sun, shade and soil type, understanding mature size, pruning flowering and non-flowering trees and shrubs, working with lawn grasses

Week 4

Planting and Maintaining the Site Area

 

Planting - proper handling and planting depth and distance, fertilization and root stimulators

Maintaining - pest control for insects, fungus, and "critters", mulching, identifying and dealing with weeds, basic pruning , dividing perennials

Hardscapes and Estimates
Learn the preparation and details of building patios, walks and retaining walls, including appropriate materials. See what
tools and equipment are needed for projects. Also cover planting more in depth than in the Basic Landscaping class. Estimate jobs including materials (brick, stone, plantings, mulch, seeding, soil prep), costs (fuel, travel time) and labor.

 

Note: Class will consist of both “learning” in the classroom and “doing” on site. See class schedule for details.

 

Prerequisite: Basic Landscaping or equivalent knowledge. Call 574-520-4168 for permission to skip the prerequisite class.
