Walker, Chair
Mission Statement
The Mission of the
Department of Foreign Languages is to prepare students for
citizenship in a multi-cultural, multi-lingual global
community. The Department promotes proficiency in languages,
knowledge of cultures and literatures, and students' active
engagement in cultural and linguistic exchanges. Our faculty
seek to give students a greater understanding of world affairs
in an historical context, an enhanced knowledge of the
traditions, achievements, and lifestyles of the international
community, and an appreciation of differences and similarities
among peoples and nations.
To this end, the faculty of our
Department:
take a personal and involved role in
encouraging student success in the program;
maintain an active engagement with the
scholarship of their respective disciplines and developments
in the field of second language acquisition;
promote study abroad and foreign
exchange opportunities;
support an up-to-date Language
Resource Center;
is committed to maintaining a low
student-teacher ratio.
The Department encourages community
outreach, and actively supports clubs and other organizations
related to world languages and international studies at
Indiana University South Bend.
