Informatics is the study of information technology (IT) and how it is used to solve human problems. At IU South
Bend, this field explores the science and application of IT to various disciplines, as well as social and ethical
issues facing our information society.
Special Opportunities
Students in informatics will have access to a new informatics laboratory with the latest hardware and software
available in the IT field. The lab will simulate the work environment with integrated multimedia computing devices
including UNIX-, Windows-, and Mac-based servers and work stations.
Careers
An informatics degree prepares graduates for a range of positions within the expanding field of information
technology (IT). Some of the career options include database developer/manager, biology/chemistry informaticist,
digital artist, human-computer interface designer, information architect, IT consultant, multimedia specialist,
network manager, software developer, stage and lighting designer, system administrator, technical writer, and
Webmaster.
