Majors & Programs

Music education students learn how to share their love of music with children of all ages from kindergarten through high school. By examining the most effective teaching methods and materials, students learn how to make music accessible to all.

At IU South Bend, we prepare our music education students to be certified (in Indiana and most other states) to teach both instrumental music and choral-general music in all grades. Every student who plans to obtain a teaching certificate must be formally admitted to the teacher education program through the School of Education.

Special Opportunities

Students gain real-world classroom experience through the student teaching component of the program, which places them directly in schools working with children.

Careers

Music education majors are prepared for many careers including choir director, elementary school music teacher, secondary school music teacher, school music supervisor, private instructor, and music librarian.
