If English is not your native language, you must demonstrate proficiency in English prior to admission to meet IUSB's minimum standard for acceptance to both undergraduate (iBT minimum score of 71) and graduate programs (iBT minimum score of 79). Please note that all test results must be sent to IUSB directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Indiana University South Bend does not accept hand-carried score reports. Our test center code is 1339.

While we prefer the TOEFL, other ways to satisfy the English requirement include:

  • Successful completion of Level 9 at The Language Company: South Bend English Institute or completion of Level 112 at an ELS Language Center.
  • A grade of 5.6 or higher for undergraduates or 6.0 or higher for graduates on the International English Language Testing System.
  • Immigrant Students currently residing in the South Bend area may take the IUSB Interim Placement Examination.
  • A bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited U.S. university.
  • An A or B score in English Language on an official Ordinary Level Certificate
  • An A or B score in English Language on the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or WAEC's Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (SSCE).
  • Complete 24 transferable semester-credit hours at a U.S. college or university.
  • Obtain an SAT I verbal score of 450 or higher.
