  • You must complete the IU South Bend Application for Financial Aid to receive summer financial aid. You can complete the application in the Information Center: Gateway to Excellence or call and ask that one be mailed to you. You can also request one by e-mailing our office at finaid@iusb.edu.
  • You must have a valid Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2007-08 academic year on file prior to Monday, June 30, 2008. You may complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
  • Your financial aid will not be packaged until you have enrolled in a minimum of 6 (or 4 for graduate students) credit hours.
  • Undergraduate students must be admitted into a degree-granting program and enrolled in 6 or more credit hours for the summer.
  • Graduate students must be admitted into a degree-granting program and enrolled in 4 or more credit hours for the summer.

Students must be making satisfactory academic progress to be eligible for aid.

General Information

  • Guest students are not eligible for financial aid for summer sessions.
  • Summer aid can be used to pay for any education-related expense incurred during your summer enrollment period; however aid will not be credited to your bursar account until all eligibility requirements are completed.
  • Students who expect to use financial aid to pay for summer fees should register early for all classes so that your aid will be processed in time for your bill due date.
  • If you choose to wait and register later, your classes could be full and could significantly delay your financial aid processing.
  • If you have registered for summer sessions I and II, your financial aid for BOTH SESSIONS will be disbursed ten days prior to summer session I. If you receive a refund of financial aid, you must remember to save enough funds to pay for books and supplies for summer session II.

Withdrawing from Classes in the Summer
If you withdraw from all of your summer courses, you may be required to repay some of the financial aid you received for payment of your bill. The amount you may need to repay is determined by a federal calculation completed by the Office of Financial Aid.

Types of Aid Available for Summer

Student Loans
All students requesting a summer loan will be evaluated for summer Stafford Loan eligibility. Students who received Stafford Loans up to their full annual eligibility during the academic-year semesters will not be eligible for Stafford Loans in the summer, but may be eligible for a Federal Perkins Loan instead.

Federal Pell Grant
If you did not attend full time during the previous academic year, you may be awarded Pell Grant funds based on your enrollment for each summer session. You may also be eligible to receive some Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) money for the summer.

Summer Work-Study
If you received work-study in the previous academic year and submit a summer application, you will be reviewed for work-study funding.

Summer Overseas Study

  • If you are considering summer aid to complete an overseas study program you should discuss your plans with the Office of Overseas Study at http://www.indiana.edu/~overseas/ to make sure the program is aid eligible.
  • Financial aid for overseas study programs follow the same eligibility requirements as outlined above.

Child of Disabled Veteran or Public Safety Officer Supplemental Grant Program
If you qualify for Child of Disabled Veteran or Public Safety Officer (CVO), have a 2006-07 FAFSA on file, and file the IU South Bend Application for Summer Financial Aid, the Office of Financial Aid will apply this fee remission to your bursar account.

Summer Consortiums
