 Give us hope.                       Giving Hope

We'll do the rest.                                                          9 & 10 April 2008

The project is called Giving Hope, and is an empowerment program for orphans of genocide, political violence, and AIDS. The program was started by a group of four women who sat around their kitchen table one night, wondering what they could do to help the plight of children in their country. Three years later the program they started, literally using the clothes off their backs, has blossomed, serving over 2,000 child headed households across Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya.

You can read the details on our SOCACT website                                                                                                  (http://www.iusb.edu/~sbsocact/About%20socact_What.htm#Giving%20Hope%20Project).

On 9 & 10 April you can meet the Director. She will be coming to Indiana University South Bend to develop the next phase of our collaboration. She will be meeting and talking with others about how just plain folks can do amazing work in social justice.

The open session is on 9 April, 1:00-4:00, The Quiet Lounge (the room adjacent to The Grille) in the IUSB Administration Building.

On 10 April she will be a panelist at the IUSB Political Science Club's screening of Darfur Now!          6:00pm, Wiekamp Hall Room 1001.

Both events are on the IU South Bend campus. These events are free and open to the public.

The Role of Spirituality in Community and Nation Building

A Study Circle on community development and spirituality. A member of N a Sonje will participate along with  representatives from diverse faith traditions.

Ayiti's history -- as the first slave nation to gain independence, the role of vodou as spiritual fuel for the revolution -- will be the springboard for the discussion.

Each panelist will speak for 10 minutes about similar community building in their own faith tradition.

Following the presentation by the panel, we will form small groups (7-9) to continue the discussions roundtable-fashion. Panelists will be divided amongst the tables.

Dr. Dé Bryant, is the 22nd recipient of the Eldon F. Lundquist Faculty Fellowship, Indiana University South Bend's highest faculty award.

Her public presentation, entitled "Humanity at the Global Crossroads: Consciousness, Conscience & Choice," will urge you to consider the paradoxes inherent to working for social justice. The dilemmas will not go away. What are people of conscience to do in the face of such complexities?

Her presentation (see Pics & News) will be held on 30 March 2007, 7:00pm, Wiekamp Hall, Rm. 1001 (behind the blue wall), Indiana University South Bend.

This public lecture is free and open to the public. Anyone needing assistance should contact Indiana University South Bend's Office of External Affairs, (574)520-5111.

What's it like to work in Africa?

Lions! Tigers! Huts! No way!! Come hear the REST of the story!

This summer the Social Action Project (SOCACT) traveled to     South Africa, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and Tanzania. Come hear us talk about what it was like, how we felt, who we met, and that we never once saw a wild animal, a grass hut, or a spear (that wasn't under glass in a museum).

We will also talk about the social justice initiatives underway.
