THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY FOR PUBLIC
AFFAIRS AND ADMINISTRATION - IUSB CHAPTER
Scholarship Leadership Excellence
Background
Pi Alpha Alpha is the national honor society that recognizes academic achievement in the field of public affairs and administration. Only colleges and universities which are members of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA) are eligible to establish a PAA chapter.
Purpose of a Local Chapter
The IUSB Chapter of Pi Alpha Alpha was established in 1995. Previously, IUSB members were affiliated with the Indiana University Bloomington chapter.
The purpose of the local chapter is to uphold and bring meaning to the hallmarks of the society: Scholarship, leadership, and excellence. Members are given the opportunity to hone leadership skills in meaningful worthwhile efforts. The local chapter members undertake scholarly pursuits with an emphasis on promoting excellence in the field of public affairs and administration.
Activities planned include presentation of the Ferrettie Award to an outstanding public official at the community/alumni spring dinner. Community service opportunities are provided through local chapter activities. Fund raising will also be undertaken to provide scholarships.
Membership
Students are notified of their eligibility by SPEA early in the spring. However, individuals who meet the eligibility criteria may apply for membership and become active in the chapter throughout the year. Official induction takes place each spring.
Fees
The cost of membership is $40.00. Inductees receive an engraved certificate of membership and a lapel pin which are presented at the annual induction ceremony (the Annual SPEA Community/Alumni Dinner). The $40.00 entitles you to lifetime membership in the National Association and covers your first year in the local chapter. For those who would like to continue your membership, the membership fee is $10.00.
