From atoms and molecules to giant stars, the science of chemistry is concerned with the structure of matter and how matter and energy interact. At IU South Bend, chemistry students develop a strong mastery of chemistry and a broad knowledge of science, as well as problem-solving and analytical skills. They use state-of-the-art equipment to learn the laboratory and computer skills essential to be a successful chemist.

Special Opportunities

Undergraduates become involved in research projects with faculty members in chemistry or have internships with local companies. Chemistry majors can participate in the Biology/Chemistry Club at IU South Bend.

Careers

Depending on the kind of undergraduate degree they choose, graduates in chemistry can work as research or laboratory assistants in government or industry; enter a professional school, such as medicine, dentistry, optometry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, or law; or pursue graduate work in chemistry or a related field, such as biophysics, computer science, or chemical engineering. Other chemistry graduates work in technical marketing, sales, or technical writing, or as information specialists, computer programmers, or teachers. A graduate with an associate degree has expertise in equipment and laboratory techniques and is prepared to work as a chemical technician.

  • Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry (Special program for premedical and predental students)

You can choose from several different degrees in chemistry at IU South Bend, depending on your career interests. The Bachelor of Science program is certified by the American Chemical Society. The Bachelor of Arts program provides excellent preparation in chemistry with a liberal arts education. The Bachelor of Arts program for premedical and predental students is specifically designed for students who plan to go to medical or dental school after receiving the undergraduate degree.
