The University That Educates Michiana

Indiana University South Bend (IUSB) was founded in its pastoral setting along the St. Joseph River more than 40 years ago. Like the river itself, IUSB is a focal point for the region. Nearly a dozen north central Indiana and southwestern Michigan counties within a 50-mile radius look to the campus for academic and professional programs and for community services.

IUSB offers leading-edge instructional programs and outstanding technological facilities, laboratories, and lecture halls. The faculty has earned respect among Indiana University campuses for its aggressive pursuit of excellence in teaching and in research. More than 90 percent of the full-time faculty have earned the highest degrees in their disciplines.

With effective teaching as a top priority, the 271 full-time faculty members have garnered multiple teaching and research awards. These faculty benefit students directly by actively supporting undergraduate and graduate research and by involving students in research. Faculty members benefit the Michiana community through numerous outreach activities.

IUSB students are also a valuable asset to the region. The campus welcomes and provides support services and academic programs for beginning, transfer, and returning adult students seeking to complete a university degree. The IUSB student body is rich in diversity, including over 250 international students. The work of student interns in the community is complemented by the services of hundreds of students in education, dental education and hygiene, nursing, social work, sociology, psychology, women's studies, business and economics, and public and environmental affairs programs, who consult with community businesses and agencies on field projects as part of their academic studies. In fact, IUSB students can be found in volunteer positions and involved in service projects throughout the Michiana area.

The Schurz Library, IUSB's Bureau of Business and Economic Research, the Entrepreneurship Program, the Institute for Applied Community Research, and the Center for Community and Institutional Research all represent portals to IUSB's vast array of informational and scholarly resources. More than 9,000 area residents a year also take advantage of IUSB's continuing education programs that meet their personal goals and employment needs.

The Toradze Piano Studio represents only a fraction of the cultural foundation that IUSB provides for the Michiana region. Each year IUSB students and faculty and their partners reach 25,000 children through programs on campus and programs that extend into schools and community institutions. The campus also sponsors numerous lectures and other cultural events which are open to the public.

The Art Gallery and the Student Activities Center are the latest milestones in a long-standing effort to enrich the campus environment. These resources and the Schurz Library allow IUSB to respond to the needs of a student body of 7,400 and an alumni body of 23,000.
