Announcements (Alfred

1) The all university meeting is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on August 22. At this meeting deans will introduce their new full time staff, tenure track faculty, and lecturers. Include their name, most recent degree, and last employment, if applicable. Cabinet members are to sit “stage right”.
2) The search for a Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration is to begin. Jacquie Caul and Larry Lyntech will co-chair this search committee. Cabinet members expressed their interest in finding a budget person who understood the academic mission of the university and who supported that mission. Other searches that are to occur this year include a search for Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Vice Chancellor for Information Technologies, an Institutional Researcher, and a Dean of Graduate Programs and Research.
3) The Chancellor’s Cabinet had their retreat on Saturday, August 16. At that retreat, members discussed promoting IU South Bend as a public comprehensive university. There was a discussion of new programs for this geographic region, an emphasis on partnerships, service learning, and internships. The Chancellor is interested in “getting the bridge” done and then student housing.
4) The Chancellor is looking at private funding to refurbish the Administration Building. Estimated cost of this renovation is approximately 3.5 million. Three million dollars may come from a single source.
5) Cabinet members also discussed budget reallocation. Alfred is trying to get academic affairs into the budget reallocation process earlier than it has been.
6) The IU South Bend web page went live. The web page implementation team which is to include faculty and staff will be announced. Incorrect information on the web, design, and templates will be corrected.
Replacement Faculty
Positions:
Before we advertise for a replacement faculty position, we must have a letter of resignation from the current faculty member in the line. There will be a full page advertisement in the Chronicle of Higher Education (September and October issues) advertising faculty positions at IU South Bend. Cabinet members discussed the needs and justification of each of the faculty replacements in their respective college and schools:
The Arts are asking for three replacement positions (Visual Arts-Sculpture, Visual Arts-Photographer, and Music Theory and Composition) and one new position (Visual Arts-Art History);
Business and Economics is requesting two replacement positions (Assistant Professor of Economics and an Assistant Professor of Finance), and a Lecturer in Marketing. The money for this line would come from the lecturer in Decision Sciences line and from savings from the two Assistant Professor lines. The remainder would come from salary reserves;
Education requested three positions: Instructional Technology, Elementary Education, and Educational Foundations/Research.
Liberal Arts and Sciences requests two new people in Computer Science, an Informatics Lab Director and an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Informatics, an Assistant Professor of Chemistry to replace George Nazaroff, an Assistant Professor to replace Loy Pike who will retire May 2004, an Assistant Professor in Mathematics to replace Paul Beem, one in Psychology to replace Paul Schnur, and one in Philosophy to replace Andy Naylor who will retire in 2004. The History Department needs to replace Margarete Feinstein and Patrick Furlong. The request is for an Europeanist and for an Americanist. The unsuccessful search for a Chair of the Foreign Language Department also needs to be reopened. There may also be a need to fill Linda Fritschner’s line in Sociology with an Assistant Professor or have Linda Fritschner back in the department.
Library: The request is to replace Ellen Maher who is Head of Collection Development. This request is for a senior level person.
Nursing and Health Professions: Two searches for faculty have been unsuccessful. These lines have been filled by visiting lecturers, one who is in the fourth year. The request is to fill these lines with doctorally prepared faculty.
Social Work: The request is to replace June Rose who left the university one year ago. IU South Bend MOU requires that we honor this replacement.
SPEA: SPEA requests replacement for four faculty positions: Mustafa Younis resigned May 2003, Katherine Karl accepted a position at Marshall University and resigned from IUSB July 2003, Jon Proctor resigned July 2003, and Richard Metzcus will retire May 2004.
Details about each of these positions and justifications for them were distributed at the Academic Cabinet meeting.
Alfred hopes to secure the Library Conference Room for the 2003-2004 Academic Cabinet meetings.
Respectfully submitted
Linda Marie Fritschner
