Announcements (Chancellor Mae Reck):
At the All Campus Meeting on Friday, January 9, 2004,
Chancellor Reck will discuss some past accomplishments and goals for spring
2004. William (Bill) O’Donnell accepted
the offer for the position of Vice Chancellor for Fiscal and Administrative
Affairs. Bill will be on campus
beginning February 17. This January
2004, interviews are scheduled for the Director of Marketing and Communication
and for the Director of Institutional Research.
The Chancellor also plans to introduce new hires, especially those in
student affairs, at the January 9 meeting.
The Strategic Plan for IU South Bend will be discussed at the March
Academic Senate meeting and hopefully approved by the Senate at the April
meeting. Between now and that March
meeting, members of the Campus Directions Committee will be presenting the plan
to the college and schools for discussion, comment, and amendment.
Pat Ames, the new Vice Chancellor for Information
Technology and the newest member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet, was introduced to
the members of the Academic Cabinet.
Each Academic Cabinet member spoke briefly about their current projects
or goals.
Digital Workshop for Faculty (Jenny Klein and Jim Yocom):
Friday, February 13, 2004, from 8:30 a.m. until noon,
IMS, the School of Business, and UCET will sponsor a Digital Video
Workshop. Jenny Klein and Jim Yocom explained that, at this workshop, faculty would learn
to incorporate short video segments into PowerPoint presentations. Attendees need not be familiar with PowerPoint,
but the workshop will be of great benefit for those who have a working
knowledge of PowerPoint. Jenny and Jim
asked the Academic Cabinet members if they would generate interest in this
workshop among the faculty. There will
be future notification about the workshop and its location. Tutorial assistance will be available for
those who attend.
Academic Cabinet Budget Requests for 2004-2005 (Linda
Fritschner):
Linda distributed drafts of 1) the spread sheet which
contained all of the budget requests from Academic Affairs for 2004-2005, 2)
listing of the faculty, personnel, and other requests, and 3) the academic
affairs narrative by account number.
These sheets have the requests from academic affairs ranked as necessary,
highly recommended, recommended, and would like. Cabinet members were asked to review the
material and to notify Linda by Wednesday, January 7, if there are errors.
Merit Pay (Leda Hall):
Leda distributed and discussed the “Guidelines for
Awarding Merit Pay” which she and the subcommittee on merit pay had
approved. Academic Cabinet members
discussed the guidelines and raised some concerns about how we were to deal
with equity issues. There were concerns
about the restrictions that the Board of Trustees had imposed on campuses
regarding the distribution of Special Merit Pay. Academic Cabinet Members asked Alfred to
discuss special merit pay and these restrictions at the AOC (Academic Officers
Committee) meetings. There were concerns
that Assistant and Associate Deans were ineligible for the Special Merit
Pay. The Executive Committee of the
Academic Senate will review the “Guidelines for Awarding Merit Pay”. Roy Schreiber suggested that the guidelines
need to be published and that the process for awarding special merit pay needs
greater publicity. Academic Cabinet
members suggested that the AOC press for early information regarding the Board
of Trustees decisions regarding merit and special merit pay.
Guidelines for Indiana University South Bend
Distinguished Teaching Award (Alfred Guillaume):
Alfred distributed the guidelines which explain the
eligibility and nomination process for the IU South Bend Distinguished Teaching
award, the characteristics of the selection committee, and an outline for
portfolio preparation. Academic Cabinet
members were urged to make this information known to their faculty.
Other Information:
Information regarding the “Implementation of Off-cycle
Payroll Processing Fees” was distributed.
The Deans Council will meet on Monday, January 12, at
8:30 a.m. in the Northside Conference Room of Nursing and Health Professions.
Respectfully submitted
Linda Marie Fritschner
