Natatorium Events

The Engman Natatorium in South Bend, Indiana is a building steeped in the city's history. This building has been renovated and will become the home of the Indiana University South Bend Civil Rights Hertitage Center. The building will be opened in May, 2010. Following are events planned in anticipation of and as part of the opening of the memorial.

OCTOBER 2009

Wolfson Press - "On Their Shoulders" book signing and lecture with David Healey and Lisa Swedarsky, authors of two books published by Wolfson Press on the history of African Americans in South Bend

Taste of Peace and Study Circles on Race
In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, people of all racial, cultural and religious backgrounds are invited to bring a dessert or finger food to share their ideas and experiences in order to build Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream of a beloved community. The event is sponsored by the South Bend Human Rights Commission.  The opening of the Natatorium will be part of the announcements in the program.

Martin Luther King Day Celebration Concert
Join Maestro Tsung Yeh and the South Bend Symphony in a musical program in tribute to Dr. King.  The Symphony will be joined by the Symphonic Choir of South Bend directed by Dr. Marvin Curtis and the IU South Bend Chorale conducted by Michael Wade. Tickets are free to the public.

FEBRUARY 2010

27th - 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm - Indiana University South Bend Auditorium, Northside Hall
"Lift Every Voice...Celebrating the African American Experience" Concert
Experience music by African Americans as we celebrate the African American Experience.  Guest artists are Soprano Louie Toppin, Mezzo Soprano Marietta Simpson, Tenor Orville Lawton, Flautist Bernard Phillips, Bassoonist Lecolion Washington, and pianist Joy Anne Thompson.  Choral music in a variety of genres written by African American composers will be sung the combined voices of the Symphonic Choir of South Bend.  Dr. Marvin V. Curtis will be your host for this event. 
Sponsored by a grant from The Community Foundation of St. Joseph County. Admission is free to the public.

Church in the Movement V: Building the Community
Panel Discussion: Civil Rights Heritage Center Natatorium 10:30-noon
An educational, spiritual, and cultural look at how faith-based organizations help support and tie churches to the different communities in Michiana in ways similar to the times of the Civil Rights Movement.

Evening Gospel Celebration: Olivet A.M.E. Church 6-7:30 pm

Community Grand Opening of the Natatorium Celebration Event, including a revealing of the Guard Booth. The IU South Bend Euclid Quartet will perform.
