Dear Colleagues, Office of Student Persistence: Final Enrollment data is available for the STAY@IUSB Program. The data sheet indicates the total number of students referred for the Fall 2001 semester, the number of students referred that have registered for Spring 2002, total withdrawals, GPA analyses and total FN's.
Project Team: The School of Education has been asked to join Project TEAM, a Bloomington-based initiative that encourages minority students to become teachers. This program uses a proven strategy to recruit and retain minority students in the teacher education program. Students receive generous scholarships, attend special honors seminars in education, and are supported throughout their academic career. Funding will allow recruitment and support of about 15 students per year, who will move through the program as a cohort. Project TEAM was an SDI initiative that has now been supplemented by an Eisenhower grant and Dept. of Education funds. The project began in Bloomington, spread to IUPUI and Gary, and will add IUSB and IPFW this coming year. Scholarship Website: I invite you to visit the IUSB Scholarship WEB SITE at www.iusb.edu/~scholars/ for the most up-to-date information about IUSB campus and academic unit scholarship opportunities. Campus scholarship applications are available at the admissions office and many of the scholarship applications can be printed from the web site. There are links to several national scholarship web sites and a list of Ten Top Scholarship Tips. Two scholarships may be of immediate interest to you. The Joseph L. and Julia B. Peyser Study Abroad Scholarship for undergraduate students was recently revised with input from the Peysers as well as Drs. Knowles, Rios, Robinson and Sernau (application deadline is March 1). And, The Chad Pearson Scholarship was recently funded by the parents of one of our former students (application deadline is Feb.28). I am grateful to Rose Marie Hangesbach for the outstanding work she has done as Director of Student Scholarships and to Tina Reimers who developed the web site. ASSESSING QUALITY in HIGHER EDUCATION: I would like to pass
on an invitation I recently received. Lectures: Steve Shore will be presenting the next Dean's Seminar this Friday, 15 February 2002. His talk is entitled "Interstellar Weather: You Don't Need a Weatherperson to Know Which Way the Wind Blows." We will gather at noon in the Board Room. Coffee will be available and you are welcome to bring your lunch. Margaret Scanlan will be presenting her Research Award Lecture
entitled "Literature and Terror" on Thursday, 7 March 2002 in Wiekamp Hall
room 1001 at 7:00pm.
Kudos: Les Lamon has been honored by the Indiana Center for History for the establishment of the Civil Rights Heritage Center and for his work in documenting and promoting the history of the civil rights movement in this area. Les received the Black History Award and cited as a champion of racial and social justice. Best wishes, Alfred J. Guillaume, Jr.
