How to Apply
Our application process is simple, straightforward, and convenient—and we can help you every step of the way.
Step 1: Complete the Application for Admission
Perhaps the easiest way to apply is to complete our online application. If you prefer the pen-and-paper format, printed applications can be obtained by:
Printing a copy of our application and instruction booklet (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader)
Completing the online Materials Request Form
Calling the Office of Admissions at (574) 520-4839 or toll free 1-877-GO-2-IUSB
Step 2: Send Your Application Fee
The nonrefundable application fee is $45. Your check or money order (payable to Indiana University South Bend) should be submitted with your application. If you apply online, you will pay the application fee with a credit card.
Step 3: Submit Your Credentials
Applicable official transcripts (high school and college transcripts and/or GED test scores) should be sent to the Office of Admissions directly from your high school or college. Transcript request forms are available from the Office of Admissions. Current high school students must also submit a recommendation from their counselor.
Step 4: Submit Your SAT or ACT Test Scores
Unless you have been out of school for three years or more, you should submit your SAT and/or ACT test results to IU South Bend. When you register for a test, make sure to ask that your score be sent to IU South Bend; our SAT code is 1339 and our ACT code is 1225. The scores are also usually recorded on your official high school transcript.
Step 5: Investigate Your Financial Aid Options
To apply for financial aid, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Both forms are available from the Office of Financial Aid and must be submitted by March 1 to ensure priority financial aid consideration. Visit the Office of Financial Aid Web site for more information.
Step 6: Placement Testing
All first-time students and transfer students with fewer than 26 credit hours must take placement exams in reading and mathematics, unless otherwise indicated. There is also an optional placement exam in English. The results will be used to place you in the courses appropriate to your skill level. Incoming students who have studied French, German, and/or Spanish are encouraged to take the appropriate foreign language exam for placement purposes. You will need to schedule an appointment to take the placement exams. Visit the Office of Student Services for current exam schedules, sample test questions, and upcoming placement preparation workshops.
Step 7: Advising, Registration, and New Student Orientation
Students who have been admitted to IU South Bend will be invited to an academic advising and course registration session prior to the beginning of the semester.
Step 8: Pay Your Bill
When your registration is complete, you will receive a schedule confirmation and account statement. Visit the Bursar Services Web site for payment deadlines and procedures.
