Admission Requirements

Our students come from diverse backgrounds but share a common commitment to educational success. In making our admissions decision, we look for and consider factors that emphasize academic performance and preparation. Specific requirements are listed below.

Beginning Freshmen

Graduation from an Indiana high school or comparable out-of-state institution.

At least a 2.0 cumulative high school grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale.

Rank in upper half of high school class

C average in Indiana's Core 40 curriculum, if applicable. In general, we recommend that students complete college-preparatory course work that includes:

Eight semesters of English

Six to eight semesters of mathematics

Six semesters of social science (economics, government, history, psychology, or sociology)

Six semesters of science (biology, chemistry, physics, earth and space science, or advanced environmental science)

Eight semesters of foreign language, fine arts, computer science, or technical skills

SAT or ACT scores at or above the Indiana median. Students who have been out of high school for three or more years are not required to submit SAT or ACT scores unless required for admission to a specific program.

Passing of GED or comparable state exam.

Transfer Students

Intercampus Transfer Students

Students who have completed course work on another Indiana University campus and have not earned a bachelors degree may apply for a permanent or temporary (guest) transfer. Please visit https://www.iupui.edu/~moveiu/moveiu.html for additional information.

Returning Students

Students who have stopped out or have attended another college or university since last enrolling at IU South Bend are defined as returning students. Returning students who have not earned their first bachelors degree should contact the appropriate academic division or the Office of the Registrar at 574-520-4451. Returning students who have attended another university since last enrolling at IU South Bend need to have a transcript sent to the Office of Admissions. Prior course work will be evaluated for transferability and credits will be posted to your Indiana University transcript. Students seeking an additional undergraduate degree should review the information listed below.

Second Undergraduate Degree Students

Guest Students

(Guest students are students enrolling for a semester or summer session as visitors from another institution.)

Official college or university transcript indicating good academic standing. Other acceptable documents are a letter of good standing or the most recent grade report from the home institution.

Average or above-average achievement at the home institution (at least a 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale)

Students between their senior year in high school and their freshman year in college must submit a letter of acceptance from their home institution.

Students intending to enroll in computer science, English, mathematics, or a course in the natural sciences must show evidence of required prerequisites or complete IU South Bend's placement examinations.

Non-Degree Students

Applicants who are over 21 years old and have earned a high school diploma or GED can apply as non-degree students and remain as such for up to 12 credit hours of course work. To apply as a non-degree student, please submit the Application for Admission, $45 application fee, and a copy of your high school or college transcript(s) and/or GED score.

High School Students

Current high school students who have completed their sophomore year can apply to take university courses. Talk to your high school guidance counselor to find out how university courses fit into your high school schedule and college planning. To consider you for admission as a high school student, we will need:

Programs with Special Admission Requirements

If you are interested in applying to one of the following programs, separate and/or additional information may be required.

    Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting

    Contact Dental Education at (574) 520-4158 or visit www.iusb.edu/~dental for additional admission requirements.

    Labor Studies

    Contact the Division of Labor Studies at (574) 520-4469 or visit www.iusb.edu/~sblabor to obtain an application to the labor studies program. Students applying to the Division of Labor Studies should not complete IU South Bend's application for admission.

    Music

    Prospective music majors must pass an audition with the School of the Arts. The audition may serve as a scholarship hearing for Music Talent Scholarships. For more information, contact the School of the Arts at (574) 520-4134 or visit www.iusb.edu/~arts.

    Nursing

    Admission into the School of Nursing is very competitive. Please contact the School of Nursing at (574) 520-4571 or visit www.iusb.edu/~nursing for additional admission requirements.
