The Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences
The B.A. degree will be attractive to those students who have a general interest in biology, who desire to teach biology at the secondary level, or who are interested in professions that require an understanding of biological principles.
Degree Requirements:
Students receiving the B.A. degree in biological sciences must complete the Division of Liberal Arts and Sciences requirements and at least 25 hours in the Department of Biological Sciences at or above the 200 level. All courses in the major must be completed with a C- or better
The following courses are required: Introduction to Biology L101 and Ll02, Molecular Biology L211, Genetics L311, and Biology Seminar (L403). An additional 18 credits (minimum) must be completed in the following two categories with at least one course from each category.
Category I- Organismal Courses: Vascular Plants (B300), Marine Biology (L304), Organismal Physiology (L308), Evolution (L318), Special Topics: Tropical Marine Biology in Jamaica (L342), Ecology (L473), Ecology Laboratory (L474), Introductory Anatomy and Physiology 2 (P262).
Category 2- Cellular Courses: Cell Biology (L312), Developmental Biology (L317), Genetics Laboratory (L319), Molecular Biology Laboratory (L323), Microbiology (M310), Microbiology Laboratory (M315), Medical Microbiology (M440). The work in biology must include two laboratories at or above the 200 level. Also required are Chemistry C105/C125, C106/C126, and C341, Physics P201 or P221, and Mathematics M119 or M215. A course in statistics and/or computer literacy is strongly recommended. A suggested freshman year program is provided below.
