The following courses are designed for students who are not Biology majors but seek a course as an elective or to fulfill a requirement. All these courses satisfy the Liberal Arts and Sciences Life Science requirements in areas A, C, and D. The letters P and R after the course credits state Prerequisite or Recommended courses that must be completed before taking the course listed. The designation (F), (S), (SS), (O) and (E) at the end of the course description indicates during which semester and/or year the course is usually offered (F=Fall; S=Spring, SS=Summer Session; O=Odd years only; E=Even years only).
L100 - Humans and the Biological World (3-5 cr.) Lecture and laboratory. For non-majors only. Principles of biological organization from molecules through cells and organisms. Credit not allowed for both L100 and P130. Emphasis on processes common to all organisms, with special reference to humans. (F) (S) (SS)
B101 - Plant Biology (5 cr.) Lecture and laboratory. Fundamental principles of biology as illustrated by plants: characteristics of living matter, nutrition, growth, responses to environment, reproduction, basic principles of heredity. (F)
Z103 - Animal Biology (5 cr.) Lecture and laboratory. Emphasis on relationships between all forms of animal life. Type forms (e.g. frog, crayfish, earthworm) are used to demonstrate general biological principles. Fundamental aspects of biology, inheritance, development, physiology and evolution. (F) (S)
P130 - Human Biology (4 cr.) Lecture and discussion. Course does not meet the requirements for laboratory science. Course open to non-majors only. Credit not allowed for both L100 and P130. Basic concepts of human biology: reproduction, development, heredity, physiological regulation including stress and drugs, behavioral biology. Emphasizes related social problems. (F) (S)
N200 - The Biology of Women (3 cr.) This course examines the biological basis for bodily functions and changes that take place throughout the life of females. (S).
L304 - Marine Biology (3 cr.) P: one biology and one chemistry course. An introductory lecture course for majors and non-majors involving the study of principles, concepts, and techniques of marine and estuarine biology. (S) (E)
L350 - Environmental Biology (3 cr.) P: An introductory biology course. Interactions of humans with other elements of the biosphere with emphasis on population, community, and ecosystem levels of ecology. (S)
B364 - Summer Flowering Plants (5 cr.) P: L100 or B101 or L102 or L112. A basic course in the methods of plant identification and taxonomy. (SS) (E)
L369 - Heredity, Evolution, and Society (3 cr.) P: An introductory biology course. Basic concepts and principles of evolution, heredity, and individual development. Problems of the individual and society raised by present and future genetic knowledge and technology. (F)
L391 - Special Topics in Biology: Tropical Marine Biology Laboratory in Jamaica (3 cr.) P: L304 or concurrent. Tropical marine ecosystems will be examined in detail during a 10 day trip to the Hofstra University Marine Lab in St. Anne's Bay, Jamaica. (S) (E)
