Pre-Professional Program Requirements

The requirements listed in this brochure pertain to students planning to attend Indiana University School of Dentistry although requirements for other schools should be similar. A minimum of 90 semester or 135 quarter credit hours is required for admission, but most students have achieved a B.A. or B.S. degree before starting dental school. Once you have chosen a major, you will need to be advised by that department as to the requirements needed to complete a B.A. or B.S. degree. The Dental Admissions Test  is also required prior to admission, and should be taken after the biology and chemistry requirements are completed.

The following courses are the minimum required for admission.

Biology

L101 Introduction to Biological Sci. I, lec/lab - 5 cr. hrs. and L102 Introduction to Biological Sci. II, lec/lab - 5 cr. hrs. OR
Z103 Animal Biology, led/lab - 5 cr. hrs. and a major level animal biology course with a laboratory
P261 Human Anatomy/Physiology I, lec/lab - 5 cr. hrs. and P262 Human Anatomy/Physiology II, lec/lab - 5 cr. hrs.

Chemistry

C105/C125 Principles of Chemistry I, lec/lab - 5 cr. hrs. and C106/C126 Principles of Chemistry II, lec/lab - 5 cr. hrs.
C341/343 Organic Chemistry I- lec/lab- 5 cr. hrs
C483 Biological Chemistry - lec. 3 cr. hrs.

Note: Before students can enter C105, he/she must meet the following pre-requisites: M115 Pre-Calculus and Trigonometry; OR M125 Pre Calculus Mathematics and M126 Trigonometric Functions; OR Level 3 on math placement exam and M126; OR Level 4 on math placement exam.

Physics
