Pre-Professional Program Requirements

The requirements listed below pertain to IUSB students planning to attend the Indiana University School of Optometry, although requirements for other schools should be similar. A minimum of 90 credit hours is required for admission, but the majority of accepted students have their B.A. or B.S. degree before starting Optometry School. Once you have chosen a major, you will need to be advised by that department as to the requirements needed to fulfill a Bachelor's degree.

Each applicant is required to take the Optometry Admission Test, which is given in the spring and the fall of each year.

The following courses are the minimum required for admission with a Bachelor's degree

Biology

L101 Introduction to Biological Sci. I, lec/lab - 5 cr. hrs. - 5 cr. hrs.
One additional Biology (Animal and Developmental at 200 level or above) - 3 cr. hrs.
M310 Microbiology lecture - 3 cr. hrs. and M315 Microbiology laboratory - 2 cr. hrs.
P261/P262 Introductory Anatomy and Physiology - 10 cr. hrs-[EFFECTIVE FOR FALL 2004 ADMISSIONS]

Chemistry

C105/C125 Principles of Chemistry I, lec/lab - 5 cr. hrs. and C106/C126 Principles of Chemistry II, lec/lab - 5 cr. hrs.
C341 Organic Chemistry Lecture I - 3 cr. hrs.
C342 Organic Chemistry Lecture II - 3 cr. hrs. OR C343 Organic Chemistry Laboratory I - 2 cr. hrs.
C384 Biomolecules and Catabolism - 3 cr. hrs. [EFFECTIVE FOR FALL 2004 ADMISSIONS]

Note: Before students can enter C105, he/she must meet the following pre-requisites: M115 Pre-Calculus and Trigonometry; OR M125 Pre Calculus Mathematics and M126 Trigonometric Functions; OR Level 3 on math placement exam and M126; OR Level 4 on math placement exam.

M215 Analytic Geometry & Calculus I - 5 cr. hrs.

Physics

P201 General Physics I, lec/lab - 5 cr. hrs. and P202 General Physics II, lec/lab - 5 cr. hrs.  OR
P221 Physics I, lec/lab - 5 cr. hrs. and P222 Physics II, lec/lab - 5 cr. hrs.

Statistics

K300 (SPEA or Math)

English

W231 Advanced English Composition  [EFFECTIVE FOR FALL 2004 ADMISSIONS]

Student's entering without a Bachelor's degree must have the following courses in addition to those listed above:

W131 Elementary Composition - 3 cr. hrs.

Foreign Language

One year of college level language - 6 cr. hrs. (Unless at least 2 years were completed in High School with a "C" or better grade.)

Psychology

P103 General Psychology - 3 cr. hrs. and an upper level psychology class (200 level or above)

Arts and Humanities

Fine Arts, English, Philosophy, etc. - 6 cr. hrs.

Social and Historical

Criminal Justice, Economics, History, Political Science, Sociology, Speech, Communication - 6 cr. hrs.

Of the 90 credit hours required, at least 20 credit hours must be at the 300 or 400 level

Note: Because IU Bloomington has different course distribution categories than does IU South Bend, it is recommended that any questions about which categories contains a given course be resolved with the School of Optometry (812) 855-1917.
