The National Science Foundation (NSF) has provided funds for Research
Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) at a variety of research
institutions. These research opportunities are usually for 10-12 weeks
during the summer and available to qualifying sophomores and juniors.
The REU includes a stipend for the summer research, and usually housing
and travel allowances. A wide variety of research projects are available
both in the US and other countries. Application deadlines vary, but are
usually between December and February. The REUs are wonderful
opportunities to gain exposure to cutting edge research at large
research institutions.
The
NSF web site provides a list of available
REUs, but they are arranged by institution. Each institution usually
has several (10 or more) available research projects. To find the
project areas available, you will have to click on each institution on
the
REU web site. This will also give you the qualifications expected of
successful applicants.
SURE programs
Research opportunities for undergraduates are sometimes listed under
SURE (Summer Undergraduate Research Experiences). Some of these are
funded by NSF and some are funded by other sources. Use the internet to
search for SURE programs at various institutions.
