The banking major provides a solid financial background along with entrepreneurial skills to service this growing market. The need for specialized education arises from the increased competitiveness within the financial services industry. Many banks have made tremendous efforts to serve not only the budding entrepreneur, but also those entrepreneurs who have been successful in growing to new heights in sales and market expansion. Growing entrepreneurial businesses have significant funding needs. As is often the case with a growing business, there are insufficient internally generated cash flows to finance expansion. Firms can choose to go public, seek private equity, or turn to their banker to supply the funds needed to stoke future growth. Banks need skilled employees with the ability to recognize those entrepreneurial opportunities, who possess the depth of finance knowledge to evaluate the deal's potential and who have the ability to close the sale.
The program will offer a wide variety of courses in finance, entrepreneurship and sales management to ensure that graduates possess the skills necessary to be successful in this growing industry. Jamshid Mehran, professor of finance, was instrumental in putting together the curriculum. Professor Mehran said, "These graduates will be able to staff a growing industry that needs an intelligent, well-trained workforce to take advantage of opportunities as they arise. Competition is fierce and those institutions that have the best and the brightest will surge ahead of the pack."
