| General Information
The Department of Chemistry at IUSB offers several undergraduate degrees including:
Careers IUSB graduates with degrees in chemistry or biochemistry pursue advanced studies in medical school, dental school, pharmacy and pharmacology programs, or graduate programs in various fields of chemistry and biochemistry. Other graduates immediately start rewarding careers in industry, such as working in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, perfume industry, food technology, adhesives, steel and lubricant industries, medical and agricultural diagnostics, instrumentation development, as well as pharmaceutical sales and textbook support. Instrumentation The department houses a variety of instruments for chemical and biochemical analysis and research, including instruments for gas chromatography (GC), GC-Mass spectroscopy (GC-MS), high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), flame atomic absorption (FAA), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (FT-NMR), fluorescence spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility and various types of uv/vis spectroscopy, microplate reader, and gel electrophoresis equipment. Computational resources in the department include HyperChem, HyperChem Lite, and Gaussian computational software. Research opportunities Students are encouraged to become involved in research projects, both
at IUSB and at other
research institutions. The chemistry faculty have ongoing research
programs that include undergraduate science majors. Many of the students
involved in research present their findings at local and national professional
meetings, including that National Conference
of Undergraduate Research, a meetings of the American
Chemical Society. Students are encouraged to work with their research
advisor to write a grant proposal for funding from
SMART. Summer research fellowships are also available from SMART.
