Advising
All chemistry and biochemistry majors as well as potential majors are strongly urged to seek advisement for course schedules from one of the chemistry faculty.
Freshman Advising
Freshmen who are considering a major in chemistry should contact Dr. Bill Feighery (or any other chemistry faculty member) as soon as possible. Freshmen considering a biochemistry major should contact Dr. Gretchen Anderson. Because most chemistry courses for majors have prerequisites, advisement with chemistry faculty will ensure the most efficient course plan.
In general, before entering the chemistry or biochemistry program, we recommend that freshman complete a minimum of two years of high school algebra, one-half year of trigonometry, one year each of chemistry and physics, and three or four years of a modern foreign language. Those who have not completed the suggested high school mathematics are advised to take a semester of precalculus mathematics as soon as possible in preparation for MATH M215 Analytic Geometry and Calculus I. Appropriate chemistry, physics and foreign language courses are available at IU South Bend for those who have not had these courses in high school. A chemistry advisor can help determine the appropriate coursework that fits each student's background and strengths.
Students who plan to complete a chemistry or biochemistry degree in four years are advised to take the following courses during their freshman year:
(All courses are 3 cr. hours unless otherwise designated.)
CHEM C105 Principles of Chemistry I
CHEM C106 Principles of Chemistry II
CHEM C125 Experimental Chemistry I (2 cr.)
CHEM C126 Experimental Chemistry II (2 cr.)
MATH M215 Analytic Geometry and Calculus I (5 cr.)
MATH M216 Analytic Geometry and Calculus II (5 cr.)
Advising for chemistry and biochemistry majors
Students interested in majoring in chemistry but who have not yet declared a major should contact Dr. Bill Feighery as soon as possible. Students interested in majoring in biochemistry should contact Dr. Gretchen Anderson. Advisement is essential for the timely completion of the coursework necessary for graduation.
Chemistry and biochemistry majors should contact any of the chemistry faculty for advisement at least once a year.
