Church In The Movement Program
This Civil Rights Heritage Center program was founded by Freedom Summer class of 2002 student and Indiana University South Bend graduate Lawrence Giden. It explores how churches were and still are a source of inspiration to their members. Historically, the "black" church was THE source of strength for African Americans during hard times like living with racism and other forms of suffering. After the family, the church was the second institution that provided ones strength. It catered to the people spiritually, educationally, socially, and financially. Many say that the church was the bedrock of the movement. Today, our churches continue to be the source of inspiration for people to practice and express their faith in God whatever race, culture, or nationality. We encourage all races to come worship together in the house of God during the program, which takes place the first weekend of April each year.
After the success of three previous programs, we are excited to share with the Michiana community again by announcing our next installment in April of 2009 - "The Church In The Movement IV: The Next Generation".
