South Bend Engman Natatorium

The history of the Natatorium, built in 1922 and located in a historic, integrated neighborhood near downtown South Bend, makes it a potent symbol of black residents' resolve for Civil Rights. After nineteen years of persistent struggle and discrimination, the Natatorium was integrated by South Bend's local Civil Rights movement in 1950. The Civil Rights Heritage Center has a unique opportunity to expand its outreach in 2008 and beyond by restoring and utilizing this building.
