Landscaping Certificate
Offered in cooperation with Ginger Valley, Inc.
This certificate provides training for entry-level positions in landscaping and grounds maintenance at hospitals, schools, golf courses or apartment complexes; as nursery and landscape construction workers and as landscape planters. It also allows those employed in this area an opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in their chosen field.
Program consists of three required courses and an internship.
- Basic Landscaping
- Hardscapes and Estimates
- Landscape Design (Summer 2009)
- Internship to be arranged
Total CEUs required for certificate: 4.8 (including internship)
Successful completion requires 80% class attendance, successfully completing the internship program and passing a comprehensive test.
A one-time, non-refundable $25 registration fee is required.
Basic Landscaping
Landscape your own property or prepare to work in the field of landscaping by attending this “Learn and Do” class offered in cooperation with Ginger Valley, Inc. This is the first of three required classes that lead to the Certificate in Landscaping. Home owners and members of the general public are also welcome to attend.
Each topic will consist of a lecture at IU South Bend with an accompanying hands-on session.
Topics include:
- Site Selection and Preparation including drainage and elevation; soil testing; adding soil amendments; types of beds and edging; and working in sun and shade.
- Selecting Plants including flowering annuals and perennials; bulbs and herbs; varieties that do best in the sun or shade; and plants for the Michiana zone.
- Selecting Trees and Shrubs including selecting the right tree or bush for the site; pruning flowering and non-flowering trees and shrubs; and working with lawn grasses
- Planting and Maintaining the Site Area including planting at proper depth; and distance, mulching, pruning, and pest control.
Class consists of four “learning” lectures in classroom followed by four classes “doing” the same topic.

Hardscapes and Estimates
Learn the preparation and details of building patios, walks and retaining walls, including appropriate materials. See what tools and equipment are needed for projects. Also cover planting more in depth than in the Basic Landscaping class. Estimate jobs including materials (brick, stone, plantings, mulch, seeding, soil prep), costs (fuel, travel time) and labor.
Note: Class will consist of both “learning” in the classroom and “doing” on site
