Art and Culture across the Curriculum

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The course investigates connections among the arts (particularly visual arts), culture, and communities.

Students will spend little time in the IU South Bend campus classroom.  Rather, they will visit and explore the resources of area museums and cultural attractions such as the Japanese gardens in Mishawaka. Regional artists will do presentations about the cultural connections in their artwork.

Teachers will create an interdisciplinary unit based on state standards.  Other students will design a project to bring art and cultural diversity into their communities.  Lesson Starters, a tool created collaboratively by Jessi Lentych at the SBRMA and Dr. Marsha Heck of IU South Bend, will be a primary tool for the course.

The interdisciplinary, project-based nature of the course makes it appropriate for individuals with all levels of experience including those with little arts or diverse cultural backgrounds.  Students will have the opportunity to network with like-minded individuals.
