The Counseling and Human Services program of IUSB is well known in the northern region of Indiana. Our graduates have gone on to serve various institutions in the surrounding area as well as all over the state and the country.

Counselors seek to help others. As trained competent professionals, counselors help people explore feelings, thoughts, and concerns, to examine options, and to assist in achieving personal goals.

At IU South Bend, you can earn a Master of Science in counseling and human services. Our program provides an excellent professional education to graduate students seeking counseling careers in education, mental health services, business, and community or government agencies. The curriculum provides theoretical courses and supervised professional experiences. Internship experiences are also offered for those seeking state licensure.

Special Opportunities

Students can participate in the Annual Counseling Conference, which features a luncheon, nationally known speakers, and discussion sessions. In addition, the Annual Networking Session lends opportunity for students to meet potential employers, gather information about local mental health service providers, explore practicum and internship possibilities, and gain information about employment opportunities.

Featuring Career

Counseling graduates find careers in the following areas: institutions of higher education, personnel departments, administrative positions in social agencies, and public and private counseling agencies. School counseling graduates are prepared to serve K-12 and have obtained positions in surrounding area schools.

What Does a School Counselor Do?

Parents, administrators, teachers and students considering a career in school counseling often wonder just what it is school counselors do on a daily basis. Why do we need school counselors anyway? On a daily basis, school counselors are involved in character education, violence prevention, career planning and much more.

The Role of the School Counselor

Today's school counselors are vital members of the education team. They help all students in the areas of academic achievement, personal/social development and career development, ensuring today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow.
