Teaching and Research Interests

My career has included teaching, research, and administration and program coordination at three universities. Among my favorite courses to teach are Beginning German and courses that integrate the acquiring of language with learning to appreciate the history and culture of German speaking countries. I’ve especially enjoyed developing a course on German Film and on Faust. In literature, I’ve published on the modern German prose poems of Günter Eich. Because a teaching focus of mine has been Early Modern German Literature, this lead to another field of research, school drama in Germany during the age of the Reformation. How students best acquire a second language has always been a major interest in my career, and I’ve participated in many projects and professional development opportunities in this area. Aspects of my career that I have especially enjoyed have been advising students for the life-changing experience of study abroad and serving for several years as a Professional Development Consultant for the AATG (American Association of Teachers of German).
