Dr. Lesley Walker has been at IU South Bend since 1997. She teaches language, literature and culture classes with an emphasis on Francophone World. In Spring 2004, she was awarded a curriculum development grant along with Professor Joseph Chaney to design a course entitled "On Becoming Modern: London and Paris." In addition to traditional classroom work, students will spend three weeks in London and Paris with Professors Walker and Chaney. The course will be offered for the first time Summer 2006. Her research field is eighteenth-century French studies, specifically women's art and literature. She has published several essays in this area. An article on Madame de Genlis appeared in "Tulsa Studies in Women's Literature" fall 2004. Dr Walker is in the final stages of completing a book project, "A Mother's Love: Crafting Maternity in Enlightenment France," which explores the discursive construction of motherhood in eighteenth-century France. Dr. Walker is currently co-chair of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies Women's Caucus.
Dr. Walker was appointed department chair in July 2004.
In addition to Enlightenment studies, Dr. Walker has an abiding interest in cinema and African literature. She has developed new courses in these areas and plans to continue these efforts.
