       1. All applicants must take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). Indiana University South Bend School code is (MBA) 82L-WC-58,

           (MSA) 82L-WC-76, and (MS-MIT) 82L-WC-92. We will not consider your application complete until we receive your GMAT scores.

            Your GMAT scores will be valid for five (5) years.

      

        2. If you are applying for the MS-MIT program, you must submit an essay describing your specific skills (programming, languages, software packages,

           hardware packages, platforms, system analysis methods, telecommunications, DBMS, CASE tools) and how you acquired these skills. List all

           academic training and work experience.

      

       3. Two recommendation letters ( can be completed at the end of the on-line application)

       

       4. Complete the on-line application

Master of Science in Education  (MSEd)

 

       1. Counseling & Human Services Program

 

         ADMISSION PROCEDURES:

1.      Complete the Indiana University South Bend graduate application online at on-line application.

2..      Provide three letters of recommendation using this form.   

3.      Document all experience in a human services related field.

4.      Submit a personal statement in which you address the following:

 

a.      List and describe your work and volunteer experiences related to the field of counseling and human services.

b.      List and describe education and training related to the field of counseling and human services beyond your formal coursework

       which you have attained as a result of participation in workshops, seminars, professional meetings, etc.

c.      Why have you selected Counseling and Human Services as a preferred area of study?

d.      What characteristics do you have that you believe would make you a successful counselor?

e.      What additional information do you wish to bring to the awareness of the screening committee regarding your application?

 

5.  Demonstrate computer proficiency.

6.      Complete EDUC-G 500 - Introduction to Counseling and Ethics - with a grade of B or better.

7.      Complete an interview with program faculty.

8.      Provide official transcripts from all graduate and undergraduate institutions attended (Transcripts from any Indiana University campus need not be sent.)

 

a.      Preferred grade point average of 3.0 (cumulative GPA of an earned degree program) or a 3.25 GPA in the final 60 credits of that degree.

3.      Submit a written statement of your teaching philosophy of educating students with special needs.

4.      Answer the following four questions (up to one type-written page per question).

 

a.      How do you think children and youth learn?

b.      What is the value and purpose of special education?

c.      Describe your comfort level with technology.  What types of technology do you use daily? When you have difficulty

        with technology, what do you do?

d.      Discuss what is meant by “we believe in the value of learning for all students in collaboration with others.”

5.      Demonstrate computer proficiency.

Transition to Teaching  (T2T) Program

 

              1. Complete the on-line application.  Application fee is $45  

              2. Send in a resume

              3. Send a Self Assessment form (Secondary applicants only) or Disposition Form (Elementary applicants only).

              4. You must have a grad point average of 3.0 on a 4.o scale.

              5. If your GPA is 2.50 to 2.99, provide this work verification form of related work experience, including dates, employers and phone numbers.

              6. Send official transcripts from all the colleges and universities that you have attended.

              7. Provide a Limited Criminal History Report  using this criminal history form.  Print out and fill in the blank spaces and send it to the State Police

                  with your fee.  You can also access your criminal history report on-line at On-line Criminal History.

              8. Two letters of recommendation (can be completed at the end of the on-line application)

              9. Take the Praxis I and arrange to have your score sent to the Office of Graduate Admission. The address is listed at the top of this page.  

            10. Take the School of Education's content area tests in science and social studies (Elementary applicants only)

Master of Science in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science

 

            Please provide the following:

 

        1. Complete the on-line application. Application fee is $45 ($55 for International Students)

           2.  Send official transcripts from all the colleges and universities that you have attended.

           3. Three (3) letters of recommendation ( can be completed at the end of the on-line application)

           4. Hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education with a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

           5. If your GPA is below 3.0 and you completed your undergraduate degree too long ago or have no work experience in the field of study,

               you will be required to complete the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) test and score a 600 or above on it.  

           6. Applicants whose native language is not English should submit a TOEFL test result of 550 before they can be admitted.

           7. Students who do not have a background in computer science and/or mathematics will be required to take appropriate prerequisite course work.

 

Master of Arts in English (MA)

Master of Arts in Teaching English (MAT)

 

       Please provide the following:

 

       1. A statement of purpose identifying the your goals and interests in pursuing graduate work in English and describing the educational and

        work experiences that contributed to that sense of purpose.

     2. A copy of your teaching certificate (For MAT applicants only).

     3. A recent writing sample that demonstrates your analytical skills, research abilities, and command of clear and fluent prose (Optional).

     4. Two recommendation letters ( can be completed at the end of the on-line application)

Master of Liberal Studies (MLS)

 

  * All students wishing to enter the program should contact the director of the graduate studies of the Liberal Arts at 574-520-4185.

    

     1. Each applicant must submit an essay ( between 2 and 3 pages, typed, double spaced) to help the admission committee consider whether the student's

         background and intellectual interest constitute a good match for the MLS program. Since the MLS program has a strong emphasis on writing,

         the admission committee also uses the essay as evidence of a student's ability to write at a graduate level.

         You are encouraged to take the time to write clearly and effectively. In your essay, please discuss the following topics:

 

             a. Introduce us to your intellectual interests and goals

             b. Discuss how have you continued your education beyond your undergraduate degree?

             c. Discuss how certain artist, writers, thinkers, or experiences influenced your intellectual development.

             d. Explain why you've decided to undertake graduate work and how the MLS program fits your future plans, both personal and intellectual.

             e  Discuss what personal and professional experiences have prepared you for success in this graduate program.

Master of Public Affairs (MPA)

 

 

Application Requirements

 

Students are admitted to the MPA and its certificate programs by the MPA Graduate Admission Committee. Applicants to the program can come from a variety of educational backgrounds, including social sciences, education, social work, and humanities. Applicants for the program must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited educational institute with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Applicants who have lower than 3.0 cumulative GPA are required to take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and must score a 900 (combined verbal and math).

 

Under certain circumstances (such as relevant work experience), students may be admitted on a provisional basis. This provisional status is removed upon fulfillment of stipulated conditions. Generally, applicants admitted on a provisional basis must enroll in certain courses and must obtain a 3.0 GPA in all preliminary coursework before they are granted full admittance to the degree program.

Applications must include:

1. Essay describing applicant's interest and goals in pursuing the MPA or certificate  ( there is room for a 700 word statement at the end of the online application )

2. Three (3) letters of recommendations (can be electronically filed at the end of the on-line application)

3. Official  transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate programs attended

4. GRE scores (if applicable)

5. A non-refundable Application Fee of $45 ($55 for International Students)

                                                                                                                                                                   Application Deadlines

 

The Graduate Admission Committee to the MPA meets on a regular basis during the academic year to review applications for admission. The following deadlines should be noted to be considered for full admission to the program:

June 30th for admission to the Fall Semester;

October 31st for admission to the Spring Semester;

March 31st for admission to the Summer Semester.

    

 

Master of Social Work (MSW)

 

       1. Write a personal narrative, typically 6 - 8 pages, double spaced, typed, and 12 font. It will aid the Admission Committee in assessing the applicants

           qualifications for professional social work practices among these qualifications are: ability to think analytically and conceptually;

           clarity in self-expression; responsiveness and sensitivity to diversion; commitment to improving social conditions; and the ability

           to function creatively, responsibly and independently. Your narrative should address the following:

 

                 a. How do you account for your interest in social work?

                 b. How do you see the experience you have had in paid or volunteer work as relating to your choice of social work profession?

                 c. What is your perception or understanding of social work as a profession?

                 d. How do you see social workers intervening with individuals, families, groups, organizations, communities, and political entities?

                 e. How do you believe the mission of social work is different from other disciplines such as psychology and psychiatry?

                 f.  The concept of cultural pluralism emphasizes respect for diversity of values, heritages, customs, and lifestyles.

                        (1) what experiences have you had which make you feel that you can work effectively with people from diverse populations

                             reflecting ethnic, age, disability, socio-economic, gender and sexual orientation differences?

                        (2) What difficulties, if any, do you feel that you might have in working with any of populations listed above?

                 g. Describe an ethical dilemma you have experienced. What alternative actions did you consider and why?

                     DO NOT revel names of individuals or organizations

                 h. Recount one significant experience in which you have been involved in giving either formal or informal helping services.

                     In addition, recount one significant experience in which you were involved in receiving either formal or informal helping services.

                 i. Social work is committed to social justice. What do you understand social justice to mean? How do you think you can help advance it?

                    What experiences or factors shaped your interest in advancing social justice.

                 j. Discuss why you think you are ready to attend graduate school at this time in your life / career. Please include:

                       (1) Educational preparation

                       (2) Emotional preparation

                       (3) Time management plan: Please outline your preliminary plan to participate in the program, taking into account coursework, preparation,

                            an ability to excel in 2 separate field practica of approximately 20 - 24 hours a week for 3 semesters (keep in mind that very few practicum sites

                            offer night / evening hours.

                       (4) Beyond scheduling, how do you intend to manage / balance these time demands.

         2. Provide a original formal writing sample, no more than 3 pages in length excluding bibliography, in which you describe a major social problem of great

            concern or interest to you. Recommend a course of action for social change. Discuss the potential benefits, drawbacks, and unanticipated consequences

            of your plan. Provide citations and include a bibliography. Please use 12 font, double spaced, and typed lines. This should not be a paper written previously

            for a classroom assignment.

Master of Science in Nursing

 

Admission to the Indiana University South Bend School of Nursing master’s program requires approval by the faculty and is based on the applicant’s qualifications as evidenced by grade point average, statement of professional aspirations, official transcripts, references, etc. A personal interview may be requested.  Acceptance into the program is competitive. The following criteria must be met for unconditional admission:

 

  1. Official transcripts from all post-secondary coursework.

  2.  Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale from an NLNAC or CCNE accredited program.

  3. GRE testing is not required.  

  4. Copy of current Indiana RN license: Current unencumbered license as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Indiana. Applicant must also complete a form statement attesting that there is no action pending or have been taken against their licensure in Indiana or any other state they have currently hold or have held a license to practice nursing or health care.

    International applicants not yet licensed by any state in the U.S. will need to submit evidence of passing the CGFNS exam before applying for an RN license in Indiana. A copy of your license must be submitted at the time of application.

  5. Statistics grade (by transcript or current completion at IU South Bend): Applicants need to have a grade of B- or higher in a three credit, 300 level (or higher) class, and it  must have been taken within the last five years of the date of application. If the applicant took a course that is not 300 level, he/she may check with a graduate counselor or submit a course syllabus (not course description) to be reviewed for acceptability.

  6. Essay (goal statement): A 250-word essay describing and explaining professional career aspirations as an advanced-practice nurse.

  7. Computer skills:  Verification of ability to use computer technologies including accessing, retrieving, receiving, and communicating information.

  8. A test of English as a Foreign Language: Applicants whose native language is not English must take the Internet-based version of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), which has a speaking portion.  The applicant’s score must meet the requirements of the IU South Bend Office of Graduate Admissions. International students must apply through the Indiana University South Bend Office of International Student Services. 

  9.  Essential abilities: Applicants must agree to the essential abilities policy of the School of Nursing. The policy states that students must demonstrate essential abilities in a variety of areas (judgment, neurological function, emotional coping skills, intellectual/ conceptual skills, and other behavioral attributes) as well as  meeting all progression criteria. References: Applicants need three professional references. References must use the online reference form.

  10. Criminal background check: Applicants must provide verification of a federal criminal background check within the past 12 months.

  11. Clinical practice: Two years of relevant clinical practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the past five years.  Application may be made during the cycle when the two years of experience as an RN will be reached.

  6. Criminal background documentation,  signed Criminal Background form with verification of check completed.

  7. ESL students: TOEFL score as required by the Office of Graduate Admissions.

  8. International Students: appropriate identification and immigration status documents submitted to the Office of International Students in the Administrative Building Room 147.

  9. Application Fee $45 ($55 for International Students). 

  10. Personal Essay (There is space for a 750 word personal statement at the end of the on-line application) 

  11. Form statement completed attesting to knowledge of current and previous actions against professional licensure in all states where licensure has been obtained
