Honors Program Scholarships
The Honors Scholarship: a $1,400 award for the academic year for full-time
students; all members in
good standing are eligible for the
Honors Scholarship, contingent on the availability of funds
The Alumni Association Scholarship: a
$4,000 award for the freshman year only; renewable as a $1,400 award after the
freshman year for those who maintain a 3.5 GPA and fulfill other programmatic
requirements
General Information for Receiving Scholarships
The IU South Bend Administration recently designated the Honors
Scholarship and the Alumni Association Scholarship as tuition-specific awards. As such,
these may be unavailable (or reduced in amount) for any student who has received other
tuition-specific aid sufficient to cover tuition and
mandatory fees (please note, for example, that parking is a non-mandatory fee).
Moreover, as a condition precedent of receiving these scholarships, the
Administration requires all Honors Program students to fill out
the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, as well as the IU
South Bend Financial Aid form, on an annual basis. To maximize one's eligibility
for state aid and any IU South Bend
funds, both of these forms should be returned to the appropriate
addresses by March 1, 2007. To be on the safe side, one may opt to send both
forms by the U.S. Postal Service and obtain a certificate of mailing (do not use
certified mail) from the Post Office when one does so.
The Honors Program Office (in early January 2007) will
check Honors students’ schedules so as to ascertain whether every scholarship
recipient is in good standing. Failure to remain in
good standing leaves the
Honors director no choice but to rescind the scholarship for the spring 2007
semester. Note that seniors are included under this rule. Indeed, each senior is
expected to enroll in H399, the Senior Honors Project course, no later than the
fall semester before his or her anticipated graduation in May or August, since
completion of the thesis is a prerequisite for receipt of the Honors Program
certificate. Simply put, the renewal of the scholarship does not exempt any
student from the requirement that all students must be members in good standing during the academic year covered by the renewal.
