Disposition Definitions
Indiana University South Bend Campus Police Department uses the following dispositions in closing out case reports and investigations. The definition of the disposition is a summary from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Reporting Handbook (UCR):
- Arrest-When a person is arrested; charged with the commission of the offense; and turned over to the court for prosecution.
- Exceptional-When a suspect is identified as having committed a crime, but the victim does not wish to prosecute, or the judicial branch of government declines to prosecute.
- Unfounded-A complaint which is determined through investigation to be false or baseless.
Case reports may also be closed out by:
- Pending-A complaint which has been investigated, but currently lacks sufficient information to determine who committed the crime.
- Administrative-A complaint which is reviewed and determined to be non-criminal in nature.
