The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers B.S. and B.A.
degrees in physics, a minor in physics, and a variety of courses
for non-majors in physics, astronomy, and geology.
Students interested in pursuing an engineering degree
can begin their studies at IUSB in this department.
The department's faculty is made up of talented and dedicated
teachers and scholars, who value the close interaction with
students and colleagues that is found at IUSB. Physics majors
and other interested students have the opportunity to carry out
research projects of their own design or participate in the
ongoing research of the department's
faculty.
Congratulations!
to Prof. Ilan Levine, recipient of the
2008 IUSB Distinguished Research Award

It's official! The IU Board of Trustees have promoted Dr. Monika Lynker to the
rank of Professor and Dr. Ilan Levine to Associate Professor, effective July 1,
2008. Dr. Lynker joined the permanent faculty of IUSB as an Assistant Professor
in 1995 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2001. Dr. Levine, who came to
IUSB in 2002, now joins the ranks of the department's tenured faculty.
Congratulations to Monika and Ilan!
The 2008 Student Excellence Award for the Department of Physics and Astronomy
was presented to Gregory Warrell at the College of Liberal Arts &
Sciences Honors Night on May 1, 2008. Only two years since his matriculation,
Gregory has already completed more than the 35 cr. hrs. required for the physics
major, and he has maintained a nearly perfect GPA in the process. Gregory has
also participated in research in nuclear astrophysics, under the direction of
Dr. Jerry Hinnefeld.
Six new members were inducted into the IUSB Chapter of ΣΠΣ,
the national physics honor society, on April 17, 2008. Ryan Bauernfeind,
Josh Eby, Sandy Kentner, Dan Stalvey, Steve
Vandendriessche, and Gregory Warrell join the eight members from
the inaugural class of 2006.
Congratulations to the following IU South Bend students, who have been
selected as recipients of CTS Continuing Student Scholarships in Physics
for the 2008-2009 academic year: Josh Eby, Andrew Gearhart,
Scott Myers, Nate Vander Werf, and Gregory Warrell. The
CTS Scholarships were established by a gift from the CTS Corporation
Foundation, of Elkhart. The first scholarships were awarded in 2004.
Results from the COUPP dark matter experiment, a collaboration
of the University of Chicago, IUSB, and Fermilab, were published
in the Feb. 15 issue of Science, one of the premiere scientific
journals for all the natural sciences. Dr. Ilan Levine and
Ed Behnke, former IUSB undergraduate student and currently a
research associate for Dr. Levine, are among the co-authors of
the article. More...
