The 1997 "Healing After Suicide" conference, with the theme "I Don't Have to Whisper
Anymore," took place October 17-19, 1997 in Seattle, Washington. The next AAS annual
conference will take place in the Washington, DC area (Bethesda, MD) April 15-18, 1998 and for
the first time the "Healing After Suicide" survivors conference will be held during and in
conjunction with the annual conference. You are all invited to attend these meetings and become
involved in the very active Survivors Division of AAS. AAS also compiles a national (USA and
Canada) list of survivors support groups. There is also a Clinicians Survivor's Committee that is
preparing materials for clinicians who have lost a client to suicide. If interested, contact the chair
of the committee, Judy Meade, Vienna Family Therapy Center, 1980 Gallows Road, Suite 2000,
Vienna, VA 22182. AAS also publishes a quarterly newsletter, Surviving Suicide, that is received
by all AAS members (although subscriptions are also available).

Recent suicide statisticsare available by request from the American Association of Suicidology.
The most recent data (1995) are available at at this same site. As noted, only estimates are
available for statistics regarding survivors of suicide.

A particularly valuable resource for survivors of suicide is a list of suggestions about "Beyond
Surviving: Suggestions for Survivors" compiled by Iris Bolton, Executive Director of the Link
Counseling Center in Atlanta, GA. The list appears in Dunne, McIntosh, & Dunne-Maxim
(1987) on pages 289-290. Bolton gives permission to reproduce the list without copyright
infringement for use in therapy and self-help groups (citation of the source of the list, of course,
should be given).
