Math Placement Scores and Appropriate Math Courses for CLAS
Majors
(effective Fall 2001)
Score Math Course to Enroll In
I M004, Preparation for Algebra (does not count for college credit in CLAS)
II M014, Basic Algebra (does not count for college credit in CLAS)
III M107,
College Algebra (for science majors who will take M115 and calculus)*
IV M125,
Pre-calculus
V
M126, Trigonometric Functions
VI M215, Calculus I*
Passing M004 moves the student to math level II, passing M014 moves the student to math level III, passing M107 moves the student to math level IV, passing M125 moves the student to math level V, passing either M126 or M115 moves the student to math level VI. Note that M115 covers the same material as M125 and M126 combined; a student who wishes to move directly from math level IV to math level VI can do so by taking M115.
*Note that M110, M118, M119, and M215 each meets two CLAS requirements: Natural Science and Mathematics Area D and also Languages of Quantity; M107, however, meets neither requirement.
Math Placement Levels for Other Courses
AstronomyA100, The Solar System requires math level III
A105, Stars and Galaxies requires math level III
Biology
Lower-level non-majors Biology courses have no math requirements:
B101, Plant Biology
L100, Humans and Biological World
N200, Biology of Women
P130, Human Biology
Z103, Animal Biology
Biology L101 and L102, the Biology major’s freshman core, each require that a student be at math level IV (successful completion of M107, College Algebra, or placement out of it by exam) prior to enrolling in the course. Note that L102 can be taken before L101 if the student is admitted or declares a Biology major at mid-year.
Chemistry
C100, The World of Chemistry no math requirement
C101, Elementary Chemistry requires math level IV
C105, Principles of Chemistry
I requires math level IV and high school chemistry (if
no high school
chemistry, the student should take C101 first no matter what math level
they are at). Chemistry C106 requires successful completion of C105 as a
pre-requisite.
Computer Science
C101, Introduction to Computer Programming requires math level III
Geology
G111, Physical Geology requires math level III
G112, Historical Geology requires math level III
Physics
P100, Physics in the Modern World requires math level III
P120, Energy and Technology requires math level III
P151, Excursions into Physics requires math level III
P201, General Physics
I
requires math level VI (does not require that the student actually
have taken calculus, only that they have passed trigonometry and
pre-calculus and be ready to start calculus)
P221, Physics
I
requires math M215 (completion of first semester calculus) as a pre-
or co-requirement. Note that P222, the second semester, requires M216
(second semester calculus) as a pre- or co-requirement.
Sociology
S258, Quantitative Methods requires math level II or completion of Math M014
S351, Social Statistics requires math level II or completion of Math M014

X100, Practical Reading and Study (does not count for
college credit in CLAS)
67-83
Student is required to enroll in Educ X101, Techniques in Textbook Reading (does
not
count for college credit in CLAS). It is strongly recommended that the
student not enroll
in any college-level courses, especially those requiring substantial amounts of
reading; a
student at this reading level should be encouraged to enroll in English W031or
W130 and
math level I or II courses if necessary.
84 or higher No recommendations or restrictions; student should be capable of reading college-level material.
