General Statement
Procedures to follow for both an emergency or in response to disaster are outlined in this plan. All library employees are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the emergency and disaster response procedures and take part in appropriate training.
In any emergency or disaster situation, the first course of action will be to refer to the campus policy on Safety and Security. After ensuring personal safety and stabilizing the building/damage, the Library’s Disaster Response Team will respond as appropriate.
A Disaster Response Team (D.R.T.), under the direction of the Dean of Library Services, will have full authority to deal with a disaster and its aftermath. For safety reasons, the D.R.T. will begin necessary recovery efforts only after a building has been declared safe by appropriate city/state safety representatives and/or university safety representatives.
Disaster Plan Team Responsibilities
The Disaster Response Team will meet at regular intervals to review and update the plan as needed to maintain its currency. The review will include confirmation of information contained in the plan: vendor names, restoration facilities, availability of on-site supplies and off-site supplies, membership and telephone numbers of the Disaster Team, emergency telephone numbers, and collection priorities. The committee will also take into account any university re - organization, library re-organization, new buildings or new facilities for storage and movement of materials in the stacks.
The Disaster Response Team is responsible for keeping library employees informed of the plan and any revisions, and for scheduling drills and training as needed.
A copy of the Disaster Response Plan is available on the H drive in the Disaster Plan folder, and from the library's web page, http://www.iusb.edu/~libg/collections/DisasterPlan/index.shtml. It will be reviewed annually and updated as needed. Paper copies of the plan are to be kept as follows: Dean of Library Services (off-campus residence); Campus Archivist (on-campus Archives); Head of Collection Development (off-campus residence); Reserves (on-campus).
