Preparedness Training

Training of Library staff prior to an emergency is essential if the elements of this plan are to be carried out efficiently and smoothly.
  1. The Disaster Response Team should meet at least annually to review their responsibilities and discuss any changes needed in the Disaster Response Plan.
  2. The Circulation Department/Technical Services will train the pack-out supervisors at least annually in proper handling/packing of wet materials, as they will be responsible for training others in these techniques in the event of an emergency.
  3. Local Fire Department will be scheduled periodically to present the basics of fire prevention along with first response procedures. Attendance by library employees will be voluntary. The Coordinator of Staff Development will work with the Disaster Plan Team to schedule the above training sessions.
  4. All library and media services employees will be required to familiarize themselves with the Disaster Preparedness Plan and receive basic instructions on handling emergency situations and building/collection disasters.
  5. Offer periodic workshops or demonstrations on recovery processes.
  6. DRT to tour building periodically to review locations and see demonstration on the use of disaster supplies and equipment. Identify collections with high salvage priority.
  7. Schedule orientation for new employees including student employees.
Staff trained in:
  • Sounding alarms.
  • Interpreting panels (if present).
  • Notifying Fire Department and others as called for.
  • Locating in-house emergency equipment.
  • Using fire extinguishers.
  • Closing fire doors.
  • Supervising evacuation.
  • Proper handling of books and other library materials.
