SERVICES FOR FACULTY
Schurz Library Instruction Librarians
offer instruction sessions (typically 75 min. in length) that
are customized to your needs and the needs of the class, and
may range from an overview of basic library resources to the
use of advanced or subject-specific research materials and
techniques. A Library Instruction
request
form should be completed at least one week before the
requested session in order for librarians to make appropriate
plans. During the busiest times of the semester, our
instruction room fills quickly, so it is best to request
sessions even earlier when possible. A librarian will contact
you to finalize arrangements and discuss appropriate resources
to meet the needs of the class assignment.
Classroom sessions are usually held in
the library's ground floor classroom, and may include:
- General library information
- How-to procedures for students doing
their first major paper
- Advanced research methods and tools
in a specific subject field
- Approaches to graduate research
- Online and Internet sources
- Evaluation of sources, especially
those found on the Internet
To be of most value, sessions should be
scheduled just prior to your students starting on a research
assignment. Another optimal time is soon after the students
have begun working on their research assignments. Either way,
your students should know about the assignment before their
Library Instruction session, and should have at least a
general topic in mind to research. Faculty members must
accompany their students to the instruction session, and
students must have a computer lab login before coming to the
Library.
