Indiana University South Bend
Services Offered to Individuals
General Policy
The IUSB Franklin D. Schurz Library and the Learning Resource
Center (LRC) are open to everyone and we invite and encourage
the use of our collections and services. However, since the
Library's first priority is to IU South Bend students, faculty,
and staff, there are a few limitations to the services provided
to guests not affiliated with IUSB. Those are explained in
this policy. It is assumed that students at high schools or
other colleges will use their home institution's library as
their primary library and that they will use the Schurz Library/LRC
for access to supplemental resources.
Borrowing Privileges
An Indiana University Library borrowing card is issued free
of charge to first time borrowers who are residents in the
state of Indiana or the Michiana area. A valid picture I.D.
must be shown before a card will be issued. This card must
be presented to check out materials.
Nearly all items in the general and government publications
collections may be checked out with the borrower's card. Circulation
periods for unaffiliated users is 30 days for most materials.
Complete information regarding circulation periods, renewals,
and fines are available at the Circulation Desk.
Orientation
A self-guided audiotape tour of the Library is available at
the Reference Desk. Additionally, numerous handouts describing
our resources are available in the Lobby, in the Reference
Room, and on the Library’s website http://www.iusb.edu/~libg.
Interlibrary Loan
Requests may be submitted for books or journal articles not
available at the Schurz Library. The Library will attempt
to borrow these items only if available free of charge from
another library. Students from another university should use
their institution’s Interlibrary Loan service. Complete
Interlibrary Loan policies are available at the Circulation
Desk.
Reference Information
Reference librarians are available most hours that the Library
is open for in-person, phone, or electronic assistance in
finding informational or research material. Computers in the
Reference Room have Internet access, but no word processing,
spreadsheet, or presentation software and are intended for
research use only.
Access to Electronic Resources
Full Internet access is available in the Library's Reference
Room with a guest account, which can be checked out at the
Circulation Desk. Additionally, many electronic resources,
including IUCAT (the Indiana University Libraries Online Catalog),
are accessible from remote locations via the Library's homepage
http://www.iusb.edu/~libg.
Government Publications
The Schurz Library is a partial Federal Government Depository
and makes available many print and online government documents,
most of which may be borrowed. Assistance in using this collection
is available most hours the library is open.
Special Collections
The Schurz Library has a number of special collections such
as the James Lewis Casaday Theatre Collection, the Christianson
Lincoln Collection, and the Ruchti POW Collection. Complete
information regarding these collections is available in the
IUSB Archives/Special Collections Office. IUSB guests who
wish to use these collections must make arrangements in advance
with the Archivist or Library Director.
Learning Resource Center
The Learning Resource Center (LRC) is a specialized library
which contains education oriented materials ranging from preschool
to high school level and is housed in Greenlawn Hall with
the School of Education. The LRC also has a wide assortment
of media equipment typically found in the public schools which
aid in the creation of visuals. LRC personnel are available
to assist users in finding information and creating visuals.
Detailed information, including production pricing, is available
in the LRC.
The IUSB Schurz Library and LRC invite classes and community
groups to use our resources. However, due to space and staffing
constraints, arrangements must be made in advance and we may
not be able to accommodate groups on their preferred date.
The following policies must be followed and failure to do
so may result in our asking a non-IUSB group to leave. It
also should be noted that during periods when demand is heavy,
it may be necessary to provide minimal service to non-IUSB
students.
High School Classes
High school teachers, in cooperation with their high school
librarian, are encouraged to bring their students to the Schurz
Library for research. The high school librarian's participation
in these visits is strongly encouraged. Home schooled groups
are also invited to use the Schurz Library's resources. Arrangements
must be made at least one week in advance with the Coordinator
of Library Instruction. To cause the least disruption to IUSB
students, high school class visits generally should be on
a Friday or during a break at IUSB. Upon request, the librarians
will offer, at no charge, a brief instruction session and
overview of the Schurz Library. If appropriate information
about the students is provided in advance, Circulation staff
will have IU Library borrower's cards and guest accounts for
each student ready at the time of the visit. The students
are responsible for any items that they check out and must
return the items to the IUSB Library by the due date. The
Coordinator of Library Instruction should be contacted for
further information.
Materials in the IUSB Schurz Library are generally too advanced
for students younger than high school. It is suggested that
those classes use the area public libraries for supplemental
resources to their school library. However, if a teacher has
reasons to expose a younger group to an academic library,
arrangements may be made with the Coordinator of Library Instruction.
College Classes
It is assumed that instructors at other institutions will
first work with the librarian at their home institution. If
the IUSB Library/LRC has specialized resources needed by classes
which are not available at the other institution's library,
instructors, in cooperation with their institution's librarian,
may contact the IUSB Coordinator of Library Instruction to
make arrangements for a class visit. There will be no charge
when such arrangements have been made.
If the institution has no on-site library or has insufficient
resources to support their curriculum, contractual agreements
should be made between that institution and IUSB (with appropriate
compensation) for more extensive use of the library resources
and services at IUSB. These arrangements must be made with
the IUSB Office of Academic Affairs. The agreement should
specify the level of library services IUSB will provide to
students and faculty from the other institution. If included
in the written agreement, instructors may make advance arrangements
with the Coordinator of Library Instruction for a class visit
and instruction.
If no contractual agreement has been made, an instructor
from an institution without an on-site library may contact
the Coordinator of Library Instruction to discuss possible
alternatives.
Community Groups (not affiliated with high schools
or colleges)
The librarians at IUSB welcome the opportunity to introduce
community groups to the academic resources available on a
variety of topics. Arrangements should be made with the Coordinator
of Public Relations. Generally, this service will be offered
at no charge.
