  1. Efficiently acquire materials that allow the South Bend Libraries to fulfill their mission

  2. Efficent in both price and speed of acquisition. Acquire is larger then purchasing. It includes gift processing, subscriptions to databases, leasing, etc. Futhermore, it includes claiming and check in.
  3. Provide bibliographic control to all items in the libraries' collection

  4. Collection is a larger concept than just owning. It includes those items to which the library does not own, but has access. Bibliographic control encompasses description cataloging, providing access, and catalog maintenance. Descriptive cataloging - creating bibliographic records, Marc holdings records, and the PH list. Access - subject headings, SAR, Name Authority records, Content notes, monographic series vs. serial cataloging.
  5. Provide outstanding service to the microforms rooms.

  6. Service includes pro-active maintenance of equipment as well as helping patrons.
  7. Maintain the physical quality of the collection in the best possible condition.

  8. This includes binding, pro-actively and as needed, advanced repairs, withdrawls and replacements.
  9. Provide outstanding mail delivery service to the library.

  10. Through professional development activities, employ the best method for accomplishing the above goals and stay atop of changes in library science.
