American studies offers an interdisciplinary approach to diverse aspects of American culture and society. Students are encouraged to pursue their own special interests and to take courses in a number of different departments, as
they explore economic, political, literary, and historical perspectives on American life. This work should focus on a particular period, theme, or area of concentration, such as gender, ethnicity, film, popular culture, the Jazz era,
or postmodernism.
Careers
This major provides an understanding of American culture that is useful in many fields, including film making,
broadcast media, teaching, the arts, and public affairs.

Associate of Arts with a Concentration in American Studies
Learn about certificate programs to enhance your education.
Students in this two-year program take courses in at least three different departments, including at least one
course in American literature and one course in American intellectual or cultural history. Students must also complete
a portfolio project designed to synthesize their work in American Studies.
