The study of business helps you develop an understanding of the principles and practices involved in the management of business firms in today’s dynamic economic, social, and political environment. Business students also examine the trends likely to shape tomorrow’s global economy.

At IU South Bend, you can earn a bachelor’s degree in business with a concentration in accounting, advertising, finance, human resource management, management and administration, or marketing.

Special Opportunities

Our entrepreneurship program acquaints students with the region’s small-business sector. In addition to offering courses, the program also conducts a symposia series for the community and offers student advising to small-business clients.

Faculty and students participate in a Student/Faculty Research Partners Program that investigates issues of interest to local entrepreneurs and small businesses.

Student groups include: Beta Gamma Sigma (the honorary business society), Omicron Delta Epsilon (the honorary economics society), International Honor Society of the Financial Management Association, Accounting Association, American Advertising Federation, American Marketing Association, Society for Human Resource Management, Economic Forum, and the Financial Management Association.

In addition, students have the chance to earn the following awards:

Careers

Business graduates are a hot commodity on the job market. Career opportunities vary depending on your concentration.

Accounting

The accounting curriculum prepares students for careers in auditing, corporate accounting, accounting positions in government and not-for-profit organizations, and taxation. Accounting graduates who meet the requirements for the State Board of Public Accountancy of Indiana are eligible to sit for the Uniform CPA Examination in Indiana.

Advertising

You may work in the management of advertising; in advertising sales; in product management with those firms where strong emphasis is placed on advertising; or in specialized areas of copy, layout, design, or production. These jobs may be with advertising departments of manufacturing, distributing, or retailing firms; with media, including television stations, newspapers, or magazines; with advertising agencies; or with companies dealing in specialized aspects of advertising and sales promotion.

Finance

Careers include financial analyst at a corporation, broker at an investment firm, bank loan officer, stockbroker, insurance agent, and real estate agent.

Human Resource Management

Human resource managers are the link between employers and their employees. HR specialists recruit and interview employees and advise employers on hiring policies. In addition, HR managers help firms to effectively utilize their employees’ skills to boost employee satisfaction. They work to optimize employee performance as well as dealing with employee benefits, compensation issues, labor relations, union issues, performance appraisal, and health and safety in union, nonunion, domestic, and multinational organizations.

General Business

Students who major in general business receive thorough exposure to the principles of organizational management and organizational change, along with basic grounding in ethical issues and human resource management. Additional program emphasis is then selected from among courses in finance, marketing, economics, and business law. Graduates are prepared to enter or continue in careers across a wide choice of business disciplines and applications.

For students who wish to pursue a broad general program, this curriculum provides a vehicle for organizing their studies. The integrating focus is the responsibility for administering the multiple operations of the business firm in a rapidly changing environment. Emphasis is on the process involved in setting goals for corporate effort, coordinating and controlling multiple programs, and regulating inputs and outputs with varied environments.

Objectives at the undergraduate level are to provide a broad liberal education as a base and to develop proficiency in understanding and solving interrelated business problems.

Marketing

Careers include being a marketing representative in the fields of consumer goods, industrial products, or professional services. Entry-level positions are also available in marketing research. Other options include positions in retail such as store management, merchandising, and buying; management training positions with a variety of companies; entry-level positions in advertising, public relations, and sports marketing; or direct response marketing.
