Certificate in Correctional Management
IU South Bend offers the Certificate in Correctional Management through the School of Public and Environmental
Affairs. Students complete 15 credit hours, which includes five courses covering an introduction to corrections and the
American criminal justice system, as well as correctional law, administration, and counseling.

Certificate in Dental Assisting
The study of dental assisting prepares students for careers in the dental health care delivery system. Dental
assistants prepare patients for examination, sterilize instruments, and mix various restorative and impression
materials. In addition, they take, develop, duplicate, and mount X-ray films.
At IU South Bend, you can earn a certificate in dental assisting. Our curriculum provides instruction in the
theory and practice of assisting, dental X-rays, laboratory techniques, and office practice management. The
laboratory aspect of dental assisting consists of pouring models, fabricating custom trays, making temporary
crowns, and carrying out other basic laboratory procedures. The business assistant is responsible for the
computerization of the office, making and confirming appointments, keeping records, working with insurance
information, and ordering office and dental supplies.
Graduates will be prepared to take the National Board Certification Examination and the State of Indiana
Dental Radiation Health and Safety Examination.
Special Opportunities
A North Central Dental Society Dental Assisting Grant is available to qualified students for fall and spring
semesters.
Careers
Skilled dental assistants are in demand. Work options include full time, part time, and flexible hours. Many
dental assistants specialize in a particular area of dentistry such as children's dentistry, orthodontics, oral
surgery, or office management.

Certificate in Health Systems Management
Students enrolled in the Master of Public Affairs degree can choose to specialize in Health Systems Management.
This concentration is designed for professionals already working in health care organizations, as well as for
students planning health care careers. Students in this concentration study policies, issues, and programs related
to the health care field, as well as elements of management, law, economics, political science, quantitative
analysis, and sociology. M.P.A. candidates must be certified as having achieved some on-the-job professional
experience prior to graduation The M.P.A. program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public
Affairs and Administration.

Certificate in Informatics (Post-Baccalaureate)
Graduates with a bachelor’s degree in many different fields can enhance their knowledge and job
opportunities by earning a post-baccalaureate Certificate in Informatics. Students in the multidisciplinary
field of informatics analyze and model how people collect and manage data, process data into information, and
use this information to make effective decisions for customers and end users. At IU South Bend, informatics
focuses on the application of information technology to various disciplines, as well as social and ethical issues

Certificate in International Studies
An international perspective is becoming increasingly important in our interdependent world. The Certificate in
International Studies at IU South Bend enables students in other academic areas to add an international dimension
to their degree. Students earn 21 credits for the degree, including two semesters of a foreign language and 15
additional credit hours with an international focus. Students earning the certificate are encouraged to participate
in one of IU's many study-abroad opportunities.

the arts, and human services, as well as by graduate and professional schools.

Students can earn a Certificate in Labor Studies through the Division of Labor Studies. This program deals with
work, the workplace, and workers and their organizations. It advances a body of knowledge that reflects the concerns
of modern labor organizations. Students complete 30 credit hours to earn the certificate.

Certificate in Montessori Early Childhood Education
Montessori Teacher Academy
The Division of Continuing Studies sponsors an intensive one-year precertification teacher training program for
prospective preprimary Montessori teachers. The program is affiliated with the American Montessori Society (AMS)
and accredited by the Montessori Accreditation Commission for Teacher Education (MACTE).
Students completing the program are qualified to apply for AMS certification. Optional undergraduate credit is
available through the School of Education.

Certificate in Nonprofit Management
The Certificate in Nonprofit Management is designed for individuals who would like to explore the nonprofit
sector and nonprofit management issues but do not plan to pursue a degree in nonprofit management. The certificate
complements other courses of study or career experience in areas such as social work, library science, and parks
and recreation. Students pursuing this 15 credit certificate learn how to work with or within nonprofit
organizations.

Certificate in Paralegal Studies
Students in paralegal studies take courses that deal with the law and legal research and writing. IU South Bend's
interdisciplinary Certificate in Paralegal Studies incorporates course work from the School of Public and
Environmental Affairs, School of Business and Economics, and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Paralegal
Studies Program was developed by the Division of Continuing Education with the assistance of IU South Bend faculty
members and an advisory board of local attorneys.
Careers
Graduates with the Certificate in Paralegal Studies are prepared to work in law offices assisting attorneys with
legal work including research, writing, and preparation of legal documents.
