The pervasive use of computers throughout society has made computer science one of the most popular majors for
students with an aptitude for technology. Students in this major can take a full range of computer science and
information technology courses, using IU South Bend's up-to-date computer laboratories. Courses cover topics such
as programming languages, operating systems, network technologies, Web programming, systems analysis and design,
and database systems. The computer science faculty is actively engaged in computer consulting and supervising
internships for students. They work closely with students to ensure that graduates are prepared to use their
computer science education in real-world applications.
Special Opportunities
Juniors and seniors in computer science are encouraged to participate in internships with companies in the
Michiana area that provide valuable work experience and academic credit toward the computer science degree.
IU South Bend has an active student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery, which explores uses and
capabilities of computers and provides services to computer users.
Careers
As a computer science graduate, you'll have a wide range of career opportunities. Many graduates work in the
computer industry, while others work as computer specialists for businesses, industry, or government. Graduates hold
positions such as computer programmer, systems programmer, technical support representative, systems analyst,
systems engineer, Web designer, systems design analyst, network engineer, and network administrator. Other graduates
go into related fields, such as teaching or computer sales.
