GER G101 Beginning German I (3 cr.) Introduction to contemporary German language and culture. Emphasis on interaction and communication.

GER G102 Beginning German II (3 cr.) P: GER G101 or equivalent. Introduction to contemporary German language and culture. Emphasis on interaction and communication.

GER G203 Second-Year German I (3 cr.) P: GER G102 or equivalent. Continued development of proficiency in oral and written communication in German through listening, reading, and use of German in realistic situations.

GER G204 Second-Year German II (3 cr.) P: GER G203 or equivalent. Continued development of proficiency in oral and written communication in German through listening, reading, and use of German in realistic situations.

GER G277 Women in German Culture: 1750-Present (3 cr.) The changing role of women in German-speaking society since the Enlightenment, as reflected in writings and other documents. Emphasis on historical, social, aesthetic, and philosophical factors.

GER G298 Second-Year German (3 or 6 cr.) A student who places at the third-year level on the language placement examination and completes a course at the third-year level will be eligible for 6 credit hours of special credit in GER G298. A student who places in the second semester of the second year and completes a course at the second-semester, second-year level will be eligible for 3 credit hours of special credit in GER G298. If the grade earned is A, it will be recorded for special credit; if the grade is B, S will be recorded for special credit. No special credit will be given if the grade earned is less than B.

GER G300 Deutsch: Mittelstufe I (3 cr.) P: GER G204. Reading proficiency, systematic vocabulary building, composition, and discussion through the assignment of short literary texts and non-literary texts. Conducted in German.

GER G305 Masterpieces of German Literature: Classical and Romantic Periods (3 cr.) P: GER G204 or equivalent. R: GER G306. Interpretation and textual analysis of masterpieces from classicism and romanticism. Includes works by such authors as Lessing, Schiller, Goethe, Kleist, E.T.A. Hoffmann, and Büchner.

GER G306 Masterpieces of German Literature: Modern Period (3 cr.) P: GER G204 or equivalent. Interpretation and textual analysis of masterpieces from realism and modernism. Includes works by such authors as Keller, Mann, Rilke, Kafka, Brecht, and Weiss.

GER G307 Selected Works of Contemporary German Literature (3 cr.) P: GER G204 or equivalent. Does not duplicate GER G305-GER G306. Interpretation and textual analysis of literature from 1945 to the present.

GER G313 Writing German I (3 cr.) P: GER G204 or equivalent. Emphasis on composition and review of grammar through analysis of texts in a variety of genres.

GER G314 Writing German II (3 cr.) P: GER G313 or equivalent. Emphasis on composition and review of grammar through analysis of texts in a variety of genres.

GER G330 Deutsch: Mittelstufe II (4 cr.) P: GER G300. Advanced oral and written communication. Study of selected advanced grammatical topics. Reading of primarily non-literary texts. Conducted in German.

GER G331 Business German (3 cr.) P: GER G203 or equivalent. Language and culture of business and industry in German-speaking countries.

GER G363 Deutsche Kalturgeschichte (3 cr.) P: GER G204 or equivalent. A survey of the cultural history of German-speaking countries, with reference to their social, economic, and political context.

GER G370 Introduction to German Film: From Berlin to Hollywood (3 cr.) A survey course on German film that provides an introduction to film techniques, film genres, film history, tools of analysis, and the aesthetic, sociological, political, and philosophical contexts of German film. Readings, lectures, writing assignments and discussions in English, no German required. Course counts for film studies or German.

GER G396 German Language Abroad P: At least one 300-level course in German. See department.

GER G464 German Thought and Society (3 cr.) Emphasis on situating significant literary texts in social and cultural context.

GER G465 Fortgeschrittenes Deutsch: Kommunikation (3 cr.) P: GER G314 or consent of instructor. Designed to develop speaking skills through content-based conversation with emphasis on developing fluency and accuracy.

GER G495 Individual Readings in German Literature (1-3 cr.) P: Consent of department. May be repeated. Not more than 3 credit hours may be applied toward requirements of the major.
