The study of history covers all recorded expressions of human activity—social, political, intellectual,
artistic, and economic. Because of its broad scope, history provides a great introduction to all studies that
concern human beings and their activities.
By studying history, you will be introduced to your own culture—as well as to foreign cultures from all
over the world and from many time periods. You will also develop skills vital for any career: effective writing
skills, critical analysis skills, research skills, interdisciplinary thinking and training, and curiosity and
inquisitiveness.
Special Opportunities
High-achieving students can participate in small-group seminars that examine special topics in detail and reading
courses designed to fit personal interests.
Students can also get involved with the IU South Bend Civil Rights
Heritage Center, which records oral histories of the 1960s civil rights movement in an effort to promote a better
understanding of individual responsibility, race relations, social change, and minority achievement.
Careers
A history degree is useful in many careers, including business, education, marketing, the nonprofit sector, public
relations, and telecommunications and media. In fact, surveys of business leaders show they often prefer liberal arts
majors because of their flexibility, training in critical thinking, and ability to communicate in both written and
oral forms. On the job market, history graduates stand out as experts in recognizing patterns in information.
Job opportunities include: teacher on all levels from elementary to post secondary school; researcher at museum,
think tank, or historical organization; writer/editor at newspaper, magazine, or even on documentary films;
information manager such as archivist, records manager, or librarian; law-related jobs such as attorney or legislative
staff member; and administrative positions at nonprofit organizations and foundations.
